Thrombophlebitis, reason to be grounded?
 

Hi everyone,

Earlier this year, I had Thrombosis/DVT. After the treatment, the specialist declared me healthy again and according to him, flying should not be a problem.

To make a long story short: after my medical exam and other medical investigations, the medical commision refused (contrary to the specialists opinion) to issue me a JAA class 1 medical on grounds of : 'Repetitive Thrombophlebitis'.

Has anyone ever had to deal with this ordeal and if so, were you able to go back flying again? Anyone advice on what to do so I can go back flying again?

I know several professional pilots who have been returned to class 1 flying fitness after being treated for DVT's, thrombophlebitis, or similar. They are usually T/U for the time on anticoagulants (eg warfarin), and for about a month after stopping them.

You don't give your age, which will be of some relevance. First you say that
which, to me, implies a single episode. Then, later, you say
so something isn't quite crystal clear here !

You refer to the "Medical Commission". Does this actually mean the CAA, or is this taking place somewhere other than the UK ?

Thanks. Yes it is considered a single episode by the specialists. There was some confusion initially because it appeared i had DVT twice. However, the first time was not properly treated (and thats an understatement). The second time came shortly after that.

The 'Repetitive Thrombophlebitis' was the final ruling from the Medical Commision (non-uk CAA). Now i have a good change when i go for appeal since it appears to concern a JAA ruling that can be overturned. However, my lawyer is taking over from here so have to see how it will go.
