Cruciate ligament
 
Hi,

I injured my left knee quit seriously playing rugby back in march 2003. I ruptured the Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The doctor at the time told me that I don't need an operation and to just build up the muscles around the knee to give it stability.

Well, last saturday whilst running, I snapped my hamstring because the knee is so week, now it looks as though I need a reconstruction.

Problem is, my final exams are in october, and I start the CPl in november.....so I'm right at the begining of the aviation ladder. How will Airlines view this? will I have problems retaining my class 1? I really want to sweep the whole problem under the carpet, but it seems surgery is inevitable at some point.

Any feedback would be most welcome. Thank you in advance.

Gillespie,

I had my cruciate ligament repaired in my right knee five years ago. Like you, I was told by my doctor that an operation was not necessary and to build up my quad muscles.

However, my knee joint remained very unstable and would often fill with fluid. I finally had the operation and would thorughly recommend that you get it done sooner rather than later.

What I will say, is that it was particularly painful and that the physio was no fun at all!!

It was well worth it in the long run. I now run, cycle and play football with no after effects whatsoever.

My ACL has been operated on a number of times now, once while I was working for the airlines. No problem with the medical at all, but as Studi says, the recovery time is quite long and tedious. It has never been an issue when I fly, regardless of what I'm flying, so don't worry about that, just get well again quickly :ok:
