Changes to eye standard requirements maybe ?
 

Having just read the minutes of the medical sub-sectorial team on the U.K's CAA SRG website, it seems that the opthalmology working group is to be reformed which will include the re-assesing of the refraction limits. Hopefully the other members of the JAA besides the U.K CAA will see sense and drop the dioptre limit requirement and come into line with standard accepted by the FAA and ICAO.

Personally I'd like to see the Pre-Operative LASIK limit dropped.

I can understand why you would not want a pilot who is below -8D who wears glasses, if he drops then etc, he is renedered useless (carry a spare! problem is solved).

But to say no, you were -8D and even though after surgery (2yrs on), you are free of complications, good actuity and stable refraction, the fact you were >-8D excludes you.

I think the FAA have it right, if you can see 20/20, corrected or uncorrected, then you may have a class 1.

Here's hoping anyway, It'd allow me to start a career in aviation as aircrew (training as a b1 engineer currently).

Do we have any idea when such changes may be introduced?

When will the ophthalmologic working group be reconstituted and when can we expect to hear their results?

Any knowledge or thoughts to share?

The problem is that it is not just the UK that has to agree to any regulation changes but all of our European friends. Let me tell you now, getting the French, Germans and Dutch amongst others to change the medical standards is going to be a long and painful process.

I only managed to get myself a class 1 by having LASIK; so as regards to the pre-op LASIK limit mentioned by PhilM, rules are sometimes bent by UKCAA.

Hopefully by the time they all agree JAR-FCL will have turned into EASA regulation, meaning that what used to be a kind of "recommended standard" will be a European law in force in all EU Member States. No more "yeah I know it's JAR-FCL but in our country we decided to do it this way..."

But that also means the debate could be even longer before France, etc. agrees to drop the limit.
