Eye muscle correction
 

Does any one know how strict the CAA are on the muscle imbalance of the eyes. This is currently the only thing that seems to appear to be a bother in the class one. I have perfect eye sight and all the rest of the essentials like colour vision.

I had a lazy eye from birth that was corrected with surgery before I was two. I have never had any further problems or troubles with it. Interestingly the only thing noticeable is the small scars from the inscisions that were made on both eye balls. Apparently when I'm very tired one eye tends to be a little imbalanced!

But, I digress. When I had my class 1 issue about 3 years ago the eye specialist discovered I had trouble with those spooky 3D images. To me the 3D effect is faint or non-existant. I was told that was because my eyes were not quite pointing in the same direction (not visible to the human eye (no pun intended!)). The specialist did not appear concerned for me but he had to make a mention of it on my report to the AMA. It was a tense wait to see if the CAA had anything to say to me, but no, the medical came through without fail!

It would be interesting to hear of any other cases?

Unfortunately I failed my class one due to an eye muscle imbalance despite no diplopia (double vision)

The chap at the CAA told me that surgery was an option but he strongly suggested that I did not follow that route as I could lose my vision all together.

Even more so was trying to find a reputable surgeon that would carry out the proceedure when I dont have any symptoms that cause me discomfort or problems other than flying commercially.

I'm gutted but what can you do... get on with what god gave you!

sixstrings: Are you able to converge your eyes so that your eyes are 'aligned' correctly if that is the correct expression? What tests did they use to observe that you had a lazy eye muscle? Im quite intrigued by this as i'm going for my class 1 quite soon. I dont find it a problem but I am able to voluntarily diverge my focus points due to a muscle imbalance. In all normal situations however my eyes function correctly, ie they point in the same direction and train the same way that normal peoples eyes do.

My eyes do point in the same direction under normal circumstances. You can only see an imbalance when I am really tired, sick or **** faced.

The tests involve following a light at different distances. I dont think you can cheat. They're pretty switched on!

What you will notice if you do have an eye muscle imbalance is that you cant see in 3D. Do you remember those posters that came out a while back that just looked like static on your TV screen but there was a picture in there when you looked for a while?. Well I could never see the picture. Its to do with stereoscopic vision. It cant be corrected or improved. You either have it or you dont.

This however doesn't barr you from obtaining a class one. Provided you have no double vision you can pass with an additional exam. Unfortunately my vision is outside revalidation standards on my right eye (also the lazy one). #.0 is the limit. I scraped 3.1.....

Oh well back to singing the blues!
