Am I still a deviant?
 

Had my original Class 1 issued with a deviation - eyesight was inside renewal limits but not initial issue.

Just had my renewal today but the computer didn't remove the note that the medical was issued with a deviation.

Question is - now that I am a renewal candidate, and therefore pass the eyesight test as other 'normal' people would, should my certificate still list the deviation note? I'm not overly bothered, but if doesn't need to be there, I'd rather have it removed to save any unnecessary discussions at all the interviews I'm sure to be invited to...

The AME wasn't sure what should happen.

As far as I am aware the deviant status is removed once you gain your commercial licence. Call the CAA tho and ask them, they've always been very helpful when I've called.

Cheers - that was the impression I had. I remember speaking to the medics last year and thinking it was all a bit mad, having a deviation which didn't change anything and which was removed 12 months later... Gives them something to do I suppose.

I'll give them a call and post the result on here.

Does the deviation on your class 1 prevent you from doing anything? Are there restrictions on any commercial flying you are able to do?

I ask because I am currently writing to the CAA to 'discuss my options' on this very issue.

I was told that the only limit the Class I (Deviation) imposes is that you must train on UK-registered aircraft. After gaining the CPL/IR you'll have the deviationlifted.

Other than the one mentioned above (hardly a problem), I can do absolutely anything someone with a 'normal' class 1 does. The deviation is basically a paper exercise - it's the CAA officially signing to say they know the rules but are prepared to bend them in this particular case. In short, it is the CAA who are deviating to allow you the full privilege of a medical.

Got a call from the CAA just now.

Just as V1R said, I will have the deviation removed now. Apparently, my medical renewal and CPL application crossed inside Aviation House, which is why it didn't disappear automatically when the AME printed out the new certificate. Now that all depts are aware I have a CPL, they will send me a new cert, sans deviation.

In summary therefore:

If you get a deviation, you keep it until you have a CPL issued. Thereafter, it is removed at the next renewal, giving you a normal, unrestricted Class 1.

In answer to the original question - I am no longer a deviant, just a commercial pilot!
