Will I get a Class 2 renewal?

I held a Class 2 medical until 2006, when I was ill and so lost it - obviously it has expired since then anyway. If I go for another medical, will it be classed as an inital as there's been a gap, or is it a renewal as I've held one before?

I've searched the CAA site but can't find a defintion of what constitutes renewal.

Don't quote me on it but I think if it's within 5 years it's a renewal. You can check with the CAA medical section themselves or speak to your local AME listed on the CAA website.

Up to 5 years - Renewal Medical with AME

5 - 10 Years - Extended Medical at AMS

2Close, are you referring to a Class 1? I'm only saying as I held a Class 2 up until 1999. Last year I visited my local AME who conducted an initial Class 2 as my earlier one had long since expired.

Class 2 initials can be done by the AME, so it won't make much difference anyway.
From the relevant JARs (Class 2):

(b) If a licence holder allows his Medical Certificate to expire by more than five years, renewal
shall require an initial aeromedical examination. Prior to the certificate issue the relevant medical records
shall be obtained by the AME.
(c) If a licence holder allows his Medical Certificate to expire by more than two years but less than
five years, renewal shall require the prescribed examination to be performed. Prior to the examination the
relevant medical records shall be obtained by the AME.
(d) If a licence holder allows his certificate to expire by less than two years, renewal shall require
the prescribed examination to be performed.

Main thing is that whatever you were ill with has gone or is controlled.
