Wow! This thread was a lucky find. I've just had this problem recurring again in the last few days and I was after some advice.
I had a prticularly painful ear infection some months back, and went to my GP for the 1st time since 1988.
She had some student medical tyypes 'sitting in' and after taking my blood pressure and asking me how much I smoked (WTF has that to do with the price of fish??) Cursorily examined me and told me that I didn't have an ear infection at all, but a mildly sore throat that would rectify itself given a few days.
Obviously I was a little unconvinced at this, given the amount of "Green s**t" (Don't know the technical term, sorry) that had been dripping out of said ear, but I surmised I was on a hiding to nothing with this particular doc and left.
The pain got worse that night, so I drove back again in the morning and got a second doc to take a look. "Yep. It's infected all right. Have some antibiotics" was his response.

Anyway, it's now come back again, so I'm going to try the warm oil technique and see if that does any good. Can I use 15W40 or does it need to be fully synthetic?

In the old days, you used to go along to the hard working quack with a problem, (which usually would get better on its own anyway), the quack would prescribe some or other poison, the problem got better anyway, you were happy 'cos you think the poison cured you, and the quack was happy 'cos he though he'd cured you.

In the mean time, at the other end of the spectrum, poor granny was in hospital with MRSA/C-Dif as a result of too much of the poison circulating in the community. (Although the farmers are also partly to blame.)

Someone then realised that the quack could actually do something useful. (Him telling you to stop smoking increases quit rate from 1% to 5% per year, controlling blood pressure may stop you dropping dead at an early age).

He's in quite a powerful position-the average bloke see's their quack 3 times a year, why not get him doing something useful. Now he's working hard and smart.

Well you did ask.

Flying with blocked ears due to wax.

Is it safe to fly with a blocked ear due to wax? I'm not looking for an answer that refers to the obvious degraded hearing, and all the safety issues implied, but more the pressure changes and the ability to clear ears on the descent.

Would it be ok as the sinuses are not blocked, and the airway from the mouth to the inner ear is clear?

They're aren't many studies performed in this area.

Outer ear problems are different than middle and inner ear problems.

I've not heard of a case where ear wax has grounded a pilot, or for that matter, a passenger.

You may have to work it out yourself with a little help from Mr Boyle

AME???

I get a little build up of wax in my left hear. It's never affected my hearing, but I syringe myself every six months... It's actually quite easy, my gran showed me how to do it.

Anyway, on a lighter note, I went for a medical a few years ago. The Doc was quite cocky and told me he could tell if I was Cap or FO just by looking at my ears.

He concluded I was a Captain,,, I said I wasn't.

'You're an FO?' He said....

'No' I said.... He looked completely baffled

'I'm an ATCO' I said, Headset over both ears at all times. Just happen to sleep on my left hand side

Otex
Have used this from time to time. Lots of fizzing/crackling noise and good result.
However recent purchases don't fizz and no result. Have H&S
made them emasculate the formulation?
