never met him but several people I know have - all the way from the military to the Award Scheme - they all reckoned he was intelligent, to the point and genuinely interested in what people were doing

Married for 73 years, lived to be 99 years old and died at home with his family.

If only we could all be so lucky.

Not a bad end to an interesting life, and a far better end than many for sure. RIP

RIP Prince Philip. The man who modernised the monarchy and got kids to become self aware and self sustaining with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme which seems to have had over 2 million participants globally since starting in 1956.

Would he have hated all of this sobriety?

NutLoose 9th Apr 2021 19:00

He’d probably hate all the TV coverage, I know I do.

Nige321 9th Apr 2021 19:08

So there were 59 types in his logbook.
Anyone have a list?
From a quick surf around I found:
Turbulent
Harvard
Chipmunk
Heron
Wessex
Whirlwind
Andover
B757
Concorde
VC10
Andover
Slingsby T42b
AH64 Apache
Trident
Westland WG30

Can anyone add to the list?

+1

I'm sure he would be asking what all the fuss was about, after all he was 99 and most of us will be long gone before then. As for the "royal watchers" and people leaving floral tributes, what is that all about. Have we gone totally soft as a country.

Trinity 09L 9th Apr 2021 19:44

God is my help, RIP sir, a example for all of us to follow

treadigraph 9th Apr 2021 19:49

Nige321, perhaps the Comet?

Did he fly the Basset?

May he rest in peace. A man who did his bit in World War 2 and was mentioned in dispatches. A man who ended up doing a job he did not want to do but stood up to the mark and gave it his best. A real man not afraid to say what he thought.
The DoE Award scheme has done an enormous amount of good and helped thousands of people me included. If that was his only legacy then that alone would be something to be proud of.
I shall raise a glass to him tonight.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reacted to the news of the death of Prince Philip Friday by posting a message on the website of their charitable organization, Archewell.

Set on a full-screen dark background, the message reads: “In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021. Thank you for your service… you will be greatly missed.”

Does anyone else find that a strange thing for a Grandson to leave his Grandad, Thank you for your service!
It all just sounds so impersonal.

Absolutely bizarre.

I noticed a bit of a mix-up in several online articles: HRH Prince Philip carried out a flying tour of South America in 1962 during which he flew a lot of the legs himself, alongside Peter Middleton, but that was on a BEA Dart Herald. Several sites illustrate this story with a photo of HRH arriving at Heathrow after a 1966 visit to Buenos Aires in a BUA VC10. The flight out and back for that trip were both regular services with an added first class compartment for HRH. He may well have flown the VC10 at some point (can't confirm nor deny that right now) but if you've used these articles as your source, they are most likely incorrect.

Perhaps it will bring Harry back to his senses.

RIP, a most loyal servant.

Strange?? What makes you think it's Harry's words?

RIP Prince Philip - a fine man.

What, subservience to the UK press? Don't think so.
