Indian Tourist Minister

Related no doubt to Sir Les Patterson, the Australian Cultural Attaché. Bound to do wonders for the number of tourists......

Foreign visitors should not wear skirts or short dresses, says India's tourism minister | Asia | News | The Independent

Foreign women travelling to India should not wear dresses or skirts and should not walk alone at night “for their own safety”, India’s tourism minister has said. Speaking to the media in Agra about India’s official safety advice for women, Mahesh Sharma also advised women to take photographs of the number plate of any vehicles they were travelling in.

His remarks have sparked controversy in India, where several high-profile gang rapes and attacks on women in recent years have focused global attention on the problem within the country.

Mr Sharma was speaking on Sunday about a welcome kit for foreign nationals arriving in India, which have been issued since last year and includes the safety guidelines for women.

He said: “In that kit they are given dos and don’ts. These are very small things like, they should not venture out alone at night in small places, or wear skirts, and they should click the photo of the vehicle number plate whenever they travel and send it to friends. For their own safety, women foreign tourists should not wear short dresses and skirts, he said. “Indian culture is different from the western.”.......

Dear Minister:

Well, here's a way that these people will stop aggravating you. They just travel someplace else. No worries, you don't need their short skirts, nor their currency. Win Win situation.

Harrassment and assaults of women are what he calls 'Indian Culture'

Unfortunately,he's 100% correct.

What is it that this Minister is saying that you might find wrong? It's the unfortunate truth, and he is acknowledging it.

sitigeltfel 30th Aug 2016 06:27

Other cultures have different standards and morals? If he had uttered those (self evident) sentiments in the UK, or many other countries, he would be out of office immediately and getting a visit from the thought police.

Would a Minister of a country where street robberies were endemic be wrong for pointing out that visitors shouldn't dress smartly, wear expensive jewellery or overtly use mobile phones?

No one ever raped a .38.

How ridiculous, the country has enough problems as it is!

If the supposedly most civilised country in the western world can't make the 'guns' work how the bleedin' hell is a 3rd world country like India going to manage?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Dan_Brown 30th Aug 2016 10:36

Take your point.

However my comment is not ridiculous, as I am sure the victims would agree. There are a lot of guns in that country or weapons in general. If the cops can't protect, then other measures have to be taken. Or would you advocate "lay back and think of England?". Turning the other cheek, does have it's limits.

India needs more overseas aid then they can build state brothels where the poorer male population can get rid of their sexual urges.Or raise the minimum wage there.

I had an epiphany about "necessity being the mother of all inventions" and the development of languages. The linked article helps me to understand why, some time ago, someone felt an overwhelming need to coin the term "utter tw4t" as a descriptive.

Stanwell 30th Aug 2016 14:50

I did read last year that in Adelaide (Oz), to assist immigrants with 'integration', authorities had mandated that all new office and public buildings must be equipped with 'squat' toilets.

TWT 30th Aug 2016 15:08

Stanwell, can you provide a link ? I just searched and the only thing I came up with was from 2013.Adelaide Uni does have them and some pathologist bloke thinks there should be more. That's it.No mandatory anything.

Sorry I can't provide a link, TWT.
It just came from memory and, although I recall it was a reliable source, I just can't remember exactly where I read it.
It was in the first half of last year, ISTR.
Perhaps the proposal, if you'll pardon the pun, was dumped.

p.s. Yes, that link you added was the article I was thinking of. Thank you.
It also got a mention on here on January 13th 2014 under the heading 'Multiculturalism'.
No mention of the word 'mandatory', though.

How about: females travel in groups and learn non-lethal self defence, e.g. Krav Maga? Or would sore male genitals be sufficient grounds to convict an intended rape victim?

What the minister suggests is by no means a solution to the problem but rather a workaround; a bit like a MEL release (if introducing aviation content is tolerated for once here) instead of a proper repair. In other cities, one is warned against displaying expensive items or entering certain streets at unsuitable times or at all; this is neither an attack at the underlying problem but a method to mitigate the risk.

Of course, he did only imply instead of expressively say this, but any lady considering a trip to India should well heed his words and draw her conclusions from them whether it is worth the risk or not.

Solving the problem seems to be a task for the next 2-3 generations, as it might involve abolishing the dowry tradition, by this the apparently rather high abortion rate for female fetuses (fetii?), and finally providing a more healthy male to female ratio in the country, reducing the number of sexually frustrated young men. I cannot see any other way than this to fundamentally change the apparently widespread culture of seeing a lady as "up for grabs" instead of as a respectable and revered member of society.

Or to put it another way, it's make your mind up time. Will India be a modern, dynamic, outward-looking, fast-growing Asia-style tiger economy ("subcontinental powerhouse"?), or will it end up backward, inward-looking, poverty-stricken, and governed by religions and tradition like its neighbour Pakistan. India cannot be both.

India already squanders the aid it gets on space rockets and nuclear weapons. The country is just one big bottomless begging bowl.
