Chattanooga Shootings

Apparently it is another "Lone Wolf" act of domestic terrorism.

It would be unfortunate if it transpired that Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez had any affinity with the religion of peace.

UniFoxOs 17th Jul 2015 07:23

Of course he hasn't. From the BBC article:-

He was arrested earlier this year in Chattanooga for driving under the influence of alcohol.

MTOW 17th Jul 2015 07:51

What's the significance of "domestic" before the word terrorism? I mean, as opposed to straight out terrorism?

CISTRS 17th Jul 2015 07:58

"Domestic" implies that the act was not inspired by a foreign stimulus, e.g. IS.
Wishful thinking

I normally steer clear of the American gun control debate as I feel it's a problem which only time and the American people will fix, and any disapproving input from here only serves to polarise opinion. I was however struck by a picture which accompanied TV coverage of this incident. It was a collage of photographs of around 1,000 people who had been fatally shot in the US. At first I thought they were going to say that it was of victims so far this year, but unbelievably it was of those shot dead since the Charleston shootings only a month ago!

Fatal shootings are now running at around 35 a day in the US, the annual total in the UK is only a little higher at 44 (2011 figure). I have no advice to offer or suggestions to make, but surely that can't just go on?

Sallyann1234 17th Jul 2015 09:00

Is there a gun control problem in the US then?
Strange, I haven't heard this mentioned before. What was decided last time?

SOPS 17th Jul 2015 09:00

Seems he has links to that peaceful religion.

Is he a Catholic? That peaceful religion had amongst others the IRA and Provisional IRA sending messages of peace and love to the Brits. Funding was assisted by the good peaceful Catholic donations from USA.

If I remember correctly most religions have the story of God and Satan. If that is true, then these nutters/misfits/terrorists are definitely on the side of Satan and do not represent Islam anymore than the IRA represented Catholics worldwide.

I am aware that the IRA was all about a small area of land and not world domination, but I can't help feeling by condemning all Islamists we are creating a belief system among the gullible that makes them think 'I am a Muslim therefore I must be a terrorist'. We need to disassociate these animals from mainline Islam, and if there is one big failing it is that the peaceful, normal, muslim is not disowning these creatures loudly enough.

Strangely enough, people without guns rarely shoot anyone..

meadowrun 17th Jul 2015 11:18

First shot was from his Mustang convertible. America was just not working out for him then.

Guess what, Hempy; I`ve owned guns for just over 45 years.:ooh: The first real rifle I bought was a 303 when I was 17. I`ve owned `handguns` for the last 23 years.

And I haven`t shot anyone.:= And unless someone tries to shoot/stab/blow me up first, I never will either!

If true, it does make one wonder.:(

rgbrock1 17th Jul 2015 12:00

Shouldn't be too long before the ol' padlock icon shows to the left of this thread as we get deeper and deeper into the tired American gun control "debate."

Which, by the way, is no one else's business but ours.

And yet my law abiding, assimilated Muslim next door neighbour is still a 'wolf in sheeps clothing' to you.

You get my point? Just because you own guns means all gun owners are responsible? Just because ISIS are Muslim means all Muslims are terrorists?

If you want to cater for the lowest common denominator go ahead.

p.s rgb, I'm out of the 'US gun debate'. Kill yourselves as much as you like.

Where did I say or infer that?

No, I do not.

Once again; Where did I say or infer that?

I consider you to have slighted me and I would like an apology.:=

Any warning signs?

rgbrock1 17th Jul 2015 14:35

It is beginning to appear that the gunman made multiple trips, within the last year, to "locations in the Middle East including Syria."

Why am I not surprised?

No pattern here,surely?

What We Know About the Chattanooga Gunman -- NYMag

Abdulazeez's former MMA coach, said his father told him about two years ago that the young man had left the country to "move back home,"

Abdulazeez's father was investigated by the FBI for donating money to a group with possible terrorism connections. He was placed on the terrorism watch list and questioned while he was traveling abroad, but there were no charges, and eventually he was removed from the list.

In recent months Abdulazeez grew a beard and began showing up to weekly services at the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga

a cousin who spoke to the Washington Post said he felt something was wrong with Abdulazeez during his last visit with relatives in Virginia.
..and a quote from the gunman himself, from last week.

"Brothers and sisters donít be fooled by your desires, this life is short and bitter and the opportunity to submit to allah may pass you by. Take his word as your light and code and do not let other prisoners, whether they are so called 'Scholars' or even your family members, divert you from the truth. "

As a non-'Murican, what would happen if I dared to express an opinion then?

If the earthly desires are so repulsive to these people, why don't they bypass the unpleasant phase, blow themselves up when they are born and go straight to paradise. I am sure modern technology could devise blast proof cribs.
