A cringe for Angus...

.

Some hard to listen to words from what is supposed to be our adult Prime Minister...

JULIA Gillard delivered a heartfelt apology last night: to Liz, the wife of the retiring Australian Defence Force chief Angus Houston…

Kicking off what she called “the festival of Angus” with a farewell dinner at the Australian War Memorial, Ms Gillard declared: “.. Liz, I wanted to say to you tonight some words you might find quite hard to hear. And that is every woman I know is a little bit in love with your husband.

“I know that might be difficult news, but I’ve tested this proposition with the Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, who’s a little bit in love with your husband; I’m a little bit in love with your husband and Kate Harrison, who works in my office and was John Faulkner’s former chief of staff, is in love with your husband in almost an unseemly way!

“So every woman is a little bit in love with Angus. And we’re a little bit in love with Angus because of his qualities, and they just shine through.”

Worked with AH years ago - nice bloke good pilot - immigration expert no. Another cowardly ducking from under by juliar - the honourable thing to do was call a double dissolution. Fat ugly lobster.

eagle86. From a humanitarian perspective, I think this needs to be resolved pretty quickly to stop the boats & potential losses of life. An election now would delay a solution, albeit a possibly better outcome for all concerned though.

I still find the lack of finger pointing at the Watermelons (love that term) shows a distinct lack of spine in the ALP &, for that matter, the Libs too. (Can't understand why Abbott isn't laying into them more)

At the end of the day though, she is the PM & should be banging on...err...Bang Bang's door & telling him to pull his finger out & get his Navy to work with ours to stop the smuggling. Once the boats stop, then we can take the time to get the Policy that works for us, works for Indonesia, and works for genuine refugees.

frigatebird 28th Jun 2012 23:17

So we end up with noone to doing anything and the leaky boats seem to be forming a queue from Jakarta to Christmas Island.:ugh::ugh:
One solution would be to just GIVE Christmas Island and the Cocoas to the Yanks as another of their colonys, and then it would be THEIR immigration problem. (Or we could lease them Nuclear Bases on them around which they would be required to have an Exclusion Zone).
Would make the economic refugees take an even longer boatride in rough seas to the Aus mainland then if they were still keen..

An English Channel was wide enough to prevent an invasion when backed by a resolute defence 70 years ago..

BH,
Do agree - there is absolutely no way she would call a DD. I doubt that "honour" is a characteristic that this abomination of a PM has ever heard of.

I dunno, I think this all would have been resolved without them, due to their typical extreme, impractical position that's at odds with the views of the vast majority of Australians. Even most of us pinko/lefto types want some form of border control and screening, not the 'come one come all' approach the Greens are inexplicably pushing for.

Unfortunately though, the ALP need them and the Libs know that. Otherwise they'd be a lone voice in the wilderness that everyone could safely ignore and get on with governing.

What's happened is what we all knew would happen when the ALP went into a coalition with The Greens; they're enforcing their own extremist, nutty views on the government and creating a stalemate. This particular stalemate is causing more fatalities amongst the very immigrants they claim to want to protect but that doesn't matter an inch to them. :ugh: This is typical Greens/ wealthy urban socialists behaviour; all about the Cause and nothing about the practicalities. :yuk:

Despite all the crocodile tears Labor wants to cling to any power they can find, hence the unwillingness to concede to the Libs, despite letting the problem (and the fatalities) continue. Meanwhile, the Libs are happy to let the government stink of this, and TBQH? I don't blame them.

This is the government's cock up, not the opposition's. While the government is composed partly of Greens (or Green :E) they're not likely to get a resolution.

Meanwhile, boats keep coming and ordinary people on both sides of the debate just get crankier with all three parties in general and The Greens/the ALP in particular.

There's a rumour going around that SHY only cried because she had just learnt that pies were off the menu at the trough - sorry - Members' Dining Room.

Apparently shy was tweeting, amongst the tears, about a rock concert she'd been to. She is a genuinely evil b1tch.

Yep.
100% acting IMO, and not very good acting at that. :hmm:
Women who bung on the waterworks for effect really, really annoy me. Maybe it's a girl thing.
One thing can be said for Gillard; she doesn't do it.

Ummm, February 2011 in Parliament, talking about the Queensland floods?

The cynical response at the time may have convinced her that it wasn't a good tactic.

Forgot about that one. :\

So, with only about 30% electorate support and now her partner party in government unable to be relied upon to pass essential legislation why the f... is Jooliar still hanging on to the reins of power and not calling an election?

Another boat carrying 44 people was sighted off Christmas Island late last night.
and...
Smugglers freed as new boats arrive

One small steel boat with about 44 men on board - understood to be Sri Lankan - is now being off-loaded by barge at the island's small port, Flying Fish Cove, and another has sailed across the horizon.
Police, Immigration officials and Customs officers are searching the men before leading them to a bus to be transported to the island's detention centre for processing.
The latest boat, a long, low white and blue fishing boat, has 100 Afghans on board.

A third asylum seeker vessel in six hours has just appeared on the horizon off Christmas Island.

Worrals in the wilds 29th Jun 2012 05:49

...has 100 Afghans on board.
How do they know they're Afghans? :hmm:
Claiming to be Afghan and being Afghan are sometimes two different things :suspect:, not that all the weeping and wailing in parliament last night seemed to address that fact.

I hate crocodile tears. SHY sobbing about "Hussein" when there are hundreds of thousands of Australians who desperately need help. The sick, the elderly, the mentally ill, the homeless... and there will be more and more of these people as jobs are lost thanks to this government. She can't act well enough to pretend she gives a toss about anything other than upholding her twsited ideology.

What action would be taken against an Australian parent who deliberately pushed a child out to sea in an unseaworthy vessel?

Also, if there are 31 Labor senators why were there only 29 votes in favour? Pairs, absentees or did a couple of people cross the floor?

Perhaps one good thing will come out of all this, that Australians might just think a bit more carefully before filling in the box on election day.Nothing much has changed since this:

Andu 29th Jun 2012 06:48

Linda Montram, (ABC, 702AM) breathlessly interviewed Julian Burnside this morning, and told her audience they the switchboard was "flooded" with calls and SMSs supporting Mr Burnside's wonderful idea of setting up a processing centre in Indonesia, where prospective asylum seekers could present themselves to be vetted for acceptance into Australia.

How likely would someone in a similar situation to those currently availing themselves of the "boat option" be to present him/herself for processing in Indonesia? If their passports are so dodgy - or have stamps in them disproving their 'persecuted refugee' status - that they must be ditched overboard before they can be scrutinised by an Australian immigration officer on Christmas Island, how many would avail themselves of Mr Burnside's "humane" processing centre on Java?

The way things are going, we might as well all buy ourselves a prayer mat and start banging our heads on the floor five times a day, because that's the future of this country if this current madness is allowed to continue, for madness it undoubtedly is.

The way this government is going, I'm half expecting an announcement in the not too distant future requiring all Australian homes (certainly those who have accepted the 'adopt a refugee' plan) to add a bimlat* so that visitors "will feel at home".

* A bimlat, for those not familiar with the term, is the little arrow you'll see on the ceiling of hotel rooms in Muslim countries that points to Mecca.

I had a "Homeless"* guy come up to me today asking for change so he had somewhere to sleep tonight. I politely declined but still got the "That's right, who gives a F**k about the Homelss" speech from him.

Clearly, there's no money, votes, or even inclination to shed a tear for the homeless here (In fairness, I doubt Abbott would Champion their cause either). But, I guess she's presuming that after that great declaration by one of her predecessors, all Aussie kids have been living out of poverty for 22 years.

*I have no way of verifying that he was homeless. The dishevelled look & "not quite with it" dialect does not constitute proof.

When I see a Julian Burnside or another of his lefty hand-wringing latte sipping drongo ilk take in a family of illegal immigrants (yes, I said illegal immigrants coz that's what they are!) I will listen.
We must wake up and address why it is people are bypassing a bunch of other countries to try and get into Australia, knowingly ignoring our laws. It's because of the attraction of the benefits that this travesty of a government throws at them. Eliminate those hand outs and start sending back those who arrive with no passport, and I guarantee the numbers of illegal immigrants will drastically reduce.
I, and many other Australians, are sick and tired of the chest beating and crocodile tears over this matter. Sarah Hanson-Young's performance in parliment was truly cringe-worthy.
Gillard's latest ploy of forming a comittee to recommend a course of action only serves to further illustrate that this government is broken and needs replacement.
I urge Angus H to take a well deserved holiday and let these muppetts stew in their own juices.
Election now!!
