Worrals

It was cut by the govt in march of this year.

No more govt funded aid or assistance including immigration advice, legal aid or via the application assistance scheme.

Saves about $100 million over. 4 years.

Worrals in the wilds 26th Jul 2014 08:50

So what level of immigration advice was available prior to that? Legal aid hairs between states, but I thought the only time it was generally available for immigration masters was when an Australian resident was facing deportation. I could be wrong, but that's the way I remembered it.

Many of these high profile refugee advocate lawyers do the work free, for either altruistic reasons, to boost their public profile or a bit of both. TBH, I doubt the asylum seekers would need legal aid even if it were available; leftie lawyers will be clamouring to do it.

Clare Prop 26th Jul 2014 08:54

Cynical me says Follow The Money and I doubt there are many lawyers out there that would let the money pass them by on the way to someone else's pocket.

I doubt it is taxpayers money, (apart from the cost of keeping 157 people on a customs boat for weeks on end) but someone is paying for this and someone is benefitting from it.

I always suspected that Rudd and Gillard had a vested interest in keeping the people smuggling trade going.

Takan Inchovit 26th Jul 2014 09:23

I notice with disappointment (again) the ALPBC news reporting on the 157 illegal gatecrashers, 3 leftists are interviewed for their opinions on the matter whereas Abbots comments were the only righty reported, this is how "balance" is interpreted. .... A good thing Tony is the PM.

500N 26th Jul 2014 09:30

Worrals,

They might not have got legal aid as you and i know it but legal immigration assistance, advice and a few other things, all govt funded.

Surprisingly I'm not too worried about that. For some strange reason I get the feeling that Joe and Jane Average can see, or is beginning to see through all that.
Besides, I have rarely heard anyone who fits my above description ie the average person in the street, ever say that we should 'let these poor people in.'

Fact is, quite a few of the locals in my home area have been heard to say that they wish the Navy would sink the boats with the occupants still on them!

And no, I'm not joking.

Captain Dart 26th Jul 2014 09:33

Yes SHY popped up twice on the ALPBC. Also ample and sympathetic coverage of Muslim troublemakers demonstrating in Melbourne, bringing their wars with them.

SOPS 26th Jul 2014 10:11

Reading an article about the protesters in Melbourne, seems to be that one of their major problems is they don't like the Abbott Government. I am sure that there is another government in another country they do like. I suggest they go there on the next flight. What..oh..I see..they won't get welfare there....

From SBS:

"Oliver Laughland

The federal government has cut all taxpayer funded legal advice to asylum seekers who have arrived in Australia through unauthorised channels, drawing criticism from immigration law experts who say it will jeopardise thousands of refugee protection claims."

AFAIK, 'legal advice' includes 'immigration advice'.

Such advice may still be funded by members of the community, and a small amount of give funding is available to help unaccompanied minors, but otherwise, it's cut.

Clare Prop 26th Jul 2014 12:51

I wonder, who pays Ian Rintoul's salary? Is it that Trotskyite organisation Solidarity?

Just trying to sniff out the money trail....

What a travesty of that name after the achievements of Lech Walesa.

SOPS 26th Jul 2014 13:25

It would be very interesting to get the answer to that question, Clare.

I look forward to Hedley Thomas doing one of his usual in depth reports on "the 157" country shoppers, with full records of phone logs for the period during their voyage and one month earlier.

As far as I'm concerned, there is little doubt that the Usual Suspects here in Australia did not actively orchestrate the whole thing.

Alana McTernan was pre-positioned at Christmas Island for when they thought the boat would arrive, ready to face the cameras with the disembarking "refugees" in the background and the lawyers had already prepared all the paperwork to be presented to the High Court to plead their case for asylum.

There will be an electronic paper trail. It just remains to be seen if someone like Hedley Thomas can uncover it.

Whether charges will be laid against some very public figures here on Australia if these allegations prove to be true is the moot question.

They damn well should be.

Just finished reading a very long article on the Tom Blair site. Could not recommend it too highly Do yourself a huge favour and read "Only Ten?" On the Tom Blair blog.

Clare Prop 26th Jul 2014 16:30

Interesting article.

The hate is tangible. I do a bit of work in the music industry and many musicians have leftist minds, closed like steel traps. They worship at the feet of people like Scott Ludlam. They applaud things like the effigy of Abbott being beheaded at Soundwave but get all uppity about their percieved mistreatment of refugees, Julia Gillard or whatever victim du jour.

A few times, when this stuff has come up in conversation, I have suggested if they felt so strongly about helping people in real hardship the Red Cross were always looking for volunteers. I get looked at as if I have two heads.

No way in the world would any leftist person i have ever met roll their sleeves up, get their hands dirty and actually make a difference, however small. Even the ones live off a lifetime disability pension and have plenty of time on their hands. The die hards are not only driven by hate, but incredibly, disgustingly selfish and self righteous and wouldn't know humility if it smacked them in the face.

Saltie (or Clare), have you got a link? I couldn't find it. :\

Thanks for that, I didn't realize it was available. That said I doubt it covered all the fancy lawyers that have been in the press, and would have been more a case of ''this is the Act and these are your options". As for lawyers and money, sometimes the associated publicity is worth more than the hourly rate, particularly wrt drumming up future paying work from people who saw you on the telly :suspect:. A certain local Civil Liberties advocate has been using this method for years, and very successfully, too. :}

As opposed to righties, who are being turned away at the door of the Red Cross? Or do they just freely admit to not caring about those in real hardship?

"As for the rebels, they can moan as much as they want, it's Ukranian territory and the Ukranian government has ok'd the mission so they have every legal right to go to the crash site whether the rebels like it or not."

Landy: It may be Ukrainian territory but there is no Ukrainian government in that area - the separatists are the de-facto government and the Ukrainians have been unable to remove them despite months of warfare.

I can't see our force of parking ticket jockeys with side arms doing anything other than getting shot.

SMH this morning had an article describing the Abbot idea as "nuts".

Apologies for crossed thread (oh, and how do you do those blue box quote thingies please?)

Captain Sand Dune 26th Jul 2014 22:31

Chuboy,
The point is the hypocrisy of those whom shout that something should be done – as long as someone else does it. I have found that those who actually do something positive generally do not blow their own trumpets because they’re too busy actually doing it.
With respect to illegal immigrants, Australians are becoming heartily sick of the SHY’s, the Christine Milnes, the Ian Rintouls, the Julian Burnsides et al who bang on about ‘asylum seekers’, knowing full well that their motivation is primarily for political advantage. And yes, why was Alana McTernan at Christmas Island? Holidays? I think not.

500N 26th Jul 2014 22:44

Chuboy

Yes, well, hunting righties like me do more for conservation of species than the majority of do gooder huggy fluffy lefties who pay $100 to greenpeace and call themselves greenies.

Putting up nest boxes, watering trees during droughts, eradicating vermin lie cats and foxes that kill a million natives a week, habitat restoration, habitat improvement, etc etc.

Articles: Weekend Must-Read: Ten Reasons Why I Am No Longer a Leftist

As Saltie said, a VERY interesting article, and well worth reading in full. One small excerpt stood out:

Back in 1975, after Hillary Rodham had followed Bill Clinton to Arkansas, she helped create the state's first rape crisis hotline. She had her eye on the big picture. What was Hillary like in her one-on-one encounters?

Hillary served as the attorney to a 41-year-old, one of two men accused of raping a 12-year-old girl. The girl, a virgin before the assault, was in a coma for five days afterward. She was injured so badly she was told she'd never have children. In 2014, she is 52 years old, and she has never had children, nor has she married. She reports that she was afraid of men after the rape.

A taped interview with Clinton has recently emerged; on it Clinton makes clear that she thought her client was guilty, and she chuckles when reporting that she was able to set him free. In a recent interview, the victim said that Hillary Clinton "took me through Hell" and "lied like a dog." "I think she wants to be a role model… but I don’t think she’s a role model at all," the woman said. "If she had have been, she would have helped me at the time, being a 12-year-old girl who was raped by two guys."

Hillary had her eye on the all-caps resume bullet point: FOUNDS RAPE HOTLINE.

Hillary's chuckles when reminiscing about her legal victory suggest that, in her assessment, her contribution to the ruination of the life of a rape victim is of relatively negligible import.
