UK prepares to set out steeper climate targets

"Emissions from international aviation and shipping are likely to be included in the new UK target, according to people familiar with the government’s plans, representing a major victory for environmental groups."

What are people's thoughts on the future of commercial aviation? Are we looking at the end of mass air travel in a net-zero economy?

I've got a bad feeling that the UK govt is going to go in all guns blazing to meet this target and kill off commercial aviation in the process.

I very much doubt it! They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did!

Well, they haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory so far have they? If you were on the outside looking in, I’d say an observer might think the UK govt are going all out to prove their green credentials and reduce greenhouse emissions. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear later that various decision makers in UK govt have commercial interests in the companies that will benefit from such policies .

All smoke and mirrors as they know they won't be in power when it all needs to be done. Just chasing votes and headlines. There is no way that you are going to get billions of consumers to make drastic changes to their lifestyles/consumption levels.
Unless over population is addressed, and it won't be, enjoy what we have while it lasts. The great great grandchildren of todays youngsters are going to be 'existing' in a truly horrible environment.

Until China stops opening new coal fired power stations on a regular basis there seems little point in us reducing our carbon output.

Yeah. Had come to terms with future generations being doomed so this is an ugly turn of events. Still as long as nobody is daft enought to try and turn words into action we might yet scrape through.

I remember call-me-Dave claiming that his government was going to be the greenest ever. All he managed was to desecrate the land with turbines providing an obscene level of profit for the energy companies. Boris is his father's son and anyone who has met Stanley Johnson will know what that means. Coupled with this, we have the problem compounded by Princess Nut Nut constantly dripping her Green poison in his ear.

Boris's grandstanding at the forthcoming G7 knees-up can be guaranteed; as already has been suggested, he will not be around to implement the lunacy of his expected promises. It must be hoped that the other lot (sadly but predictably, their turn is not far away) has sense sufficient to eschew the woke ravings of Islington flat-earthers and reject whatever he proposes before our economy relative to others, particularly those of Russia, China and India, is so disadvantaged that we beggar ourselves in pursuit of the global warming chimera. It's hard to think of any benefits which might have flowed from the Covid episode, but perhaps pushing that irritating child out of the limelight might be one.

The whole subject amounts no more than useless window dressing. As I have indicated so often in the past, echoed more recently by Wyler, the essence of the problem lies in human overpopulation and until this is dealt with, nothing of any real consequence will be achieved. If one of the world's most controlling and authoritative regimes cannot sustain such a programme, it reasonably might be concluded that control of population numbers is not achievable, at least by other than catastrophic means. But politicians will not acknowledge this - they will continue in the pretence of legislating to save the planet and the can conveniently can be kicked into the long grass until it becomes someone else's turn to address a larger problem.

Well one irritating child was holding court about vaccine inequality in parts of the UK MSM a couple of days ago. I guess the child ( or more probably their PR team) thought there was a danger of an erosion of brand awareness....
