Thumbs up UFOs... real or nonsense

NBC from a few days back running tic tac UFO story (apologies I am too new here to post a link):

Note: I realise the "tic tac" story has been released for some years now.

However.

More and more mainstream-media pieces being released about possible sightings. One could say it's about time given the technology available today. Not a "believer" myself but I am curious to hear opinions of my fellow aviators...

What's it to be?:
- Really ET?
- Skunkworks?
- China? (oh oh)
- A distraction from the impending collapse of USD / Covid?
etc etc

Live long and prosper!

If you have seen what I have, you wouldn't need to ask.
Yes they are real.

An old chestnut this one: Rendleshem Forrest 1980. This was mentioned in parliment,
"Either the deputy commander of a base where nuclear weapons were stored, was telling the truth or was off his head".

I've seen loads of UFOs.
Until you can identify an aircraft in the sky it is a UFO.
As for ET, not a chance in my opinion.
Might need my tin hat now.

We have been punching out radio waves advertising our presence for fifty odd years now. Someone, somewhere may be coming for a look-see.

They could be high tech dinosaurs or high tech ants.

If they have travelled for 50 gazillion miles to get here, why do they want to hide, and only grab weird people for the anal probing?

Many Airline pilots, self included, and Military pilots have had encounters at altitude with UFOs over many decades and before the internet. Encounters are reported internally and amongst colleagues and seldom reach the media which would, of course, just love to play with it as they play with themselves. When you are fortunate to be a close witness, it is really quite serious stuff. There are advantages in having an office window at 37000 ft.

but if radio waves travel at the speed of light that means they'd have to be within 50 light years of us ... just to receive the signal, let alone make the journey here

Mind you on statistical grounds alone there HAVE to be alien life forms out there somewhere. Statistics also suggest that the chances of them visiting us (unless we were some kind of special experiment or zoo) are pretty much zero

And if statists isn't enough to persuade you that ETs exist, then gravity exists throughout the universe, as do electromagnetic waves and elements etc etc etc ... so why not life too?

I heard before somewhere that SETI- (The search for extraterrestrial intelligence) reckon that radio waves just dissipate into ‘noise’ as they leave earth and travel through space. This means nothing we transmit beyond our solar system really could be interrogated or analysed by aliens?

Whatever they are, they keep crashing. Then turn into weather balloons....Allegedly.

I've taken a few UFO reports in my time, mostly late on a Friday night. Unusually, one of those was actually from an airline pilot flying an approach in the days before ubiquitous drones. I can understand how some sights could be quite unsettling until they are rationalised - Venus has been the cause of a few scares or imagine what you would think of aurora borealis if you had never heard of it and seen it before. While I expect that there is life throughout the universe I doubt it started visiting us in flying saucers only a lifetime ago to probe the cavities of midland hillbillies. The truth is out there, but it probably quite mundane.

There may well have been advanced intelligent life out there somewhere, there may well be advanced intelligence out there sometime in the future, but for more than one to exist at the same time, and within a reasonable distance from each other would have to be a hell of a coincidence.
Space is big, really big, but 13billion years of existence is a long time too.

Getting onto 30 years ago now, Singapore to Brisbane (cargo)and over Australia 2 am local time an a/c asked ATC, "do you have traffic in our vicinity?" Negative was the response. Not long after, we saw something shall we say, shouldn't have seen. No we didn't query ATC.

The aliens I get, but what would the other "advanced intelligence" be?

The idea that airline pilots are not as susceptible to pareidolia* as anyone else is ludicrous.
Itís how our mind works - we see something we donít recognise, and our brain tries to identify it using shortcuts to images we already know. There is no reason that a pilot is in any way more immune to that process.

Two reasons I believe alien UFOs are unlikely.
1. The almost unimaginable (to us) vastness of time and space
2. Despite the fact that almost everyone has a high quality camera in our pocket, there are as yet no high quality images of aliens or their craft.

*Pareidolia is the tendency for perception of a visual stimulus as an object, pattern or meaning known to the observer.

Two reasons Native Americans believed European visitors were unlikely.
1. The almost unimaginable (to them) vastness of time and space
2. Despite the fact that almost everyone had high quality charcoal sticks and animal hides in their pockets, there were no high quality images of European visitors or their craft.

Well ok then; one, but the point is valid

The best evidence that there is intelligent extraterrestrial life is that they don't bother to come here.

Mind and eyesight can play extraordinary tricks on you.
On the deck one night in house in Auckland - with wine in hand and absolutely convinced I could see some weird sparking phenomenon in the sky at altitude near the horizon.
Called out Mrs T who could also see it.
We watched for ages, and I were just about t' phone it in and then I realised... insulator sparking on the lamp-post near the end of the street.
You would have sworn it was tens of miles away, such was the optical illusion.
The wine was very good too..

A good mate (let's call him "Nigel", he posts on here from time to time) was heading over the Channel one late evening out of London for Bordeaux. He and the SFO looked up and saw a bright object with a long tail overtake them, travelling at quite a rate of knots. They discussed it and decided that talking to the company would not end their careers. It was suggested by the company ops team that it was a Chinese manned launch to orbit.

After hearing the story one evening in the pub, Nigel and I found a globe and piece of string. I googled the launch location and steering angle. The piece of string was extended from China on a great circle route and it fell neatly over the Channel, heading south over France.

My personal view is that life elsewhere in our solar system is possible (but the chances are slim), life in our galaxy is probable, life in the universe is inevitable but anyone who believes we have been visited by aliens from the planet Tharg ought to be placed in a rubber room for their own protection.
