The new Spitting image

I was actually looking forward to seeing the new version of the show on Britbox but apparently it was only available via the Brit version of Britbox and not the US one. Apparently, NBC was going to air the new show in the US but got a little scared that it might upset powerful people, although I have no idea if that's true or not. It was available in the US via FB for a period of time apparently, but I don't have a FB account.

For those that saw it, was it as good as the old Spitting Image and do you think it's worth me finding a way to watch it in the US?

Many thanks!

I remember watching it back in the 80s and laughing at the portrayal of Reagan as a drivelling old fool, barely able to string a sentence together. Then one day I caught a speech by Reagan on TV and thought "this can't be Reagan - he is clear and articulate, and obviously in possession of all his marbles (at that time at least)".

Mind you, with Trump it is difficult to imagine how the caricature could be worse than the real thing, so I'm not sure what NBC is worried about!

Just enter Spitting Image 2020 on Youtube and you'll find the first episode already there.

Personally, I don't think it's as good as the original - probably because most of todays subject are 100% caricatures of themselves already.

Too many politicians on both sides of the Atlantic as just beyond caricature. You don't need a Trump or Johnson puppet when the originals are so laughable.

Sallyann is spot on. Anything Spitting Images says of those clowns is likely to be less silly than what they already say...

Much like the old version, it was a bit of a curate’s egg. Dominic Cummings, Priti Patel and the Jacinda Arden song were the bits that got most laughs in our house. Cummings perpetually trying to eat baby Wilf was my favourite bit, but that’s just me!

Thank you, Curious Pax, it seems you're someone who actually watched the show, and I haven't heard the phrase "curate's egg" for so many years! I guess I'll wait until it's available somewhere in the US. The few bits I've seen on youtube were funny but not outrageously so, but the puppets looked good. However, I don't think they got Trump quite right.

The link that clareprop posted isn't available in the UK and presumably also not in the US (I tried it with a US VPN with no success) so I also await full episodes without having to sign up to Britbox. I understand the US was going to be showing it on one of the network TV channels, but they chickened out for fear of incurring the wrath of Trump so it will be available on Facebook Premium whatever that is.

How odd.
There's a lot of comments on the link from people based in the UK and I've just used my VPN to watch it from the UK, US, Oz and (for the hell of it) Poland.

You only exist when I am looking at you. When I look away, you cease to exist. ('60s problem)

Lots of bits of the prog on youtube.

I haven’t seen the new Spitting Image however I believe, other than Captain Boring, there are no Labour puppets.

This seems incredible to me with Corbyn alone providing enough material for a whole series!

Throw in Dianne Abbott, David Lammy and Emily Thornberry et al there’s a goldmine.

I believe the producer of the show is ‘slightly to the left!’

clareprop - I did try your youtube link/video but it wasn't available in the US. I then tried a UK VPN connection and still had the same problem. I'm sure it's available in some countries but have other things to do. No, you're not invisible and I appreciate you trying to help.

The government of the day has always provided much more fertile ground for satire rather than the opposition, regardless of who is in power. This is largely because they can actually do things (and hence cock them up), rather than just talking hypothetically. Always been like that, as far back as That Was The Week That Was. If it had returned in the early 2000s Blair and Brown would have been at the forefront.

And why, when writing a topical current affairs satire show they would want to put much resource into an increasingly irrelevant (even in his own party) former leader of the opposition when the current government provides so much material is beyond me!

There's only been one episode as far as I'm aware. There's a lot of material to get through so I wouldn't be too concerned that the first episode concentrated on the more important topics and people at first. However, now that I've watched the first episode, the Trump character isn't right. The puppet is OK but the voice is wrong. I hope they can fix that. I did like Boris' caricature but not living in the UK for so many years I didn't catch onto who is his alien baby-eating colleague. I'll figure it out...

Just watched episode 2. Pretty weak I thought. Was very US oriented - Pelosi, Pence and Musk dominated, with relatively small amounts of Johnson, Gove and Starmer. VCtenderness would enjoy Starmer’s reference to the shadow cabinet as the donkey sanctuary!
