With respect, there's no evidence that the electorate voted for a hung parliament (by which I mean specifically cast their vote in a manner calculated to deny any party a majority).

Some people struggle to differentiate between a democracy and an electoral system. The fact you don't like the latter doesn't mean the absence of the former.

Aah, my apologies cornish: I congratulate Mr Corbyn for his magnificent electoral victory which I failed to notice owing to my poor numerical skills.

There's a long standing tradition in many parts of the world that " 1 + 1 = 2" and the progression thereon is accepted as basic arithmetic. It's been a while since I did the basics, but using that principle and adding up the total votes cast for the various candidates, .the distribution favoured a "Hung Parliament". ... but then you knew that, really, didn't you. Just a little tease really.
Unfortunately this is a grown-up thing and we need to be serious, because, as a result of 'the system' that popular vote pattern became corrupted into a false Tory majority. What this means, of course, is that never mind what you voted for, the politicians will reorganize it to suit their aims. Somewhat 'iffy' for a nation boasting about democracy, fairness and universal suffrage; but it's been going on for a long time and the populace believe that they have an effective vote, so nothing will change.
ShotOne -- your inadequacy has long been noted, your apology is accepted but, yet again, it seems you're not taking all the tablets!

Yes. I can count and yes, I do understand exactly what you mean. I'm less sure you understand (or even want to understand)my point.

It's self evident that no party achieved a majority of the overall vote at the last election. That's not the same as saying the country voted for a hung parliament. While I don't have any empirical data, my very strong feeling is that the number of voters who actually wanted a hung parliament (as opposed to majority government of any particular party) is pretty small. As such, a hung parliament arguably has no more validity than a majority Conservative government. The "distribution", as you put it, may have favoured a hung parliament, but the electorate didn't.

Unfortunately, good as democracy is, you can't satisfy everyone.

I believe KnC is on the bench with regards to JB, but is allowed on other forums. He maybe allowed to return in future to JB, we will have to wait and see. I have to say his presence does improve and adds balance to debates on these forums IMHO.

Kind regards
Mr Mac

I reckon that the much missed K'n C would have good grounds for defamation of character if that typical nonsense remains! ... apart from anything else, his sense of colour selection was so ... unadventurous

AO - I'm given to understand that Mr K is likely to be wth us again in the near future. This, I understand. is very much due to the efforts of one of our members who demonstrates the Voltaire principle in fact, rather than just quoting it. For that I offer my own sincere plaudits and gratitude.
Less endearing are the members who are so offended by others opinions that they 'migrate' to a forum where they can all sit around congratulating each other on their perspicacity and general ability to sort out the world's problems. It's a move, of course, which has its bonus value in reducing, slightly, the 'hang 'em, shoot 'em input but a sad reflection of the contributive value of those members.

Jack does have a very valid point, it's no surprise that the Covid hotspots all have a high population density. The stock riposte of "you need to get rid of yourself then" is a typically lazy answer to a more complex issue, largely rooted in the global pursuit of GDP growth with little thought for people's quality of life. It's time for a reset, but with ridiculous mantra like "build, build, build" its clear that's not going to happen anytime soon, sadly.
