It’s Monday 18th January 2021 and The Spectator is completely free to publish bolleaux and you are completely free to repeat it on this forum ORAC.

The idea that “the nasties” will migrate to somewhere away from the well-known providers to somewhere private, uncensored and encrypted is just ridiculous. They are already there and we know that. What planet is that author on?

The idea that the major social media platforms have been the arbiters of decency and moderated discussion is also completely ridiculous. They haven’t been that and have been dragged kicking and screaming at every step towards any kind of accountability.

The status quo was lots of nastiness and extreme discussion in the mainstream, and truly dark stuff elsewhere. The new order might look like more accountability in mainstream discussion (private services; public domain) and pretty much the status quo for the truly ugly world which the intelligence services can spend their time deciphering. We don’t have to put up with peadophilia, terrorism, bullying, dangerous distortions of established knowledge, or even constant outrageous lies, in the name of freedom of speech. That isn’t freedom of speech: It is the absence of code to live, communicate properly and coexist.

If the Trump and all the rest of the Hetzers want to have a sensible and accountable discussion, the public domains are there; with rules. And they are welcome. If they want to exist in a dangerous ruleless world, they can go to the places that already exist and I would happily wave their disturbed and anti-social asses on their way.

And I would also join the call to “Lock him up” in Trump’s case, as he, not Hilary Clinton deserves jail time.

+1 but I would add ... then misappropriate the key somewhere over the wrong side of the Mexican border wall, preferably where it adjoins the Pacific Ocean.

It’s your country Lom, if you don’t care about the decency achieved and think it is worth sacrificing in the name of freedom and retribution (respectively), have at it.

Assange is a jerk who arranged his own jail time. Should have gone to Sweden and stood like a man. Still, rotting forever in ill-fitting orange garb is something the UK would not do. We reserve the proper treatment for the disturbed and dangerous: Victorian jails, slop out, constant threat, psycho-pharma to pass the 23 hour incarceration: Yeah, jail is a big breeze in the UK.

That certainly would shorten the Wikileaks info chain; Julian can claim an exclusive straight from the horse's mouth.

Horse's mouth? He won't hear much from there. Trump invariably speaks the other end of his alimentary canal.

Reports are that trump wants a big send-off befitting his great stature. 21 gun salute etc.
I could roundup a sputtering old Jenny with a couple of guys and a frozen turkey.

He wants it, but the Pentagon, in a break with recent tradition, will not host an Armed Forces Farewell tribute to President Donald Trump.

I see the Pentagon has indeed vetoed any military participation in the Orange One's farewell. I would have liked to see a 21 gun salute though ... provided the guns were all pointed in the right direction.

Another news item from the ABC advises that the giant Trump Baby Blimp has been acquired by the Museum of London for its protest artefacts collection.

What a shame it won't be flying at his departure.

I doubt it will be permanent but suspect it will remain in some form for a few months. During that same period, we'll really learn about Trump's legacy: a country as close to civil war as it has been for over a century, almost 400,000 dead to Covid, race riots, damaged relations with the rest of the world, the population being lied to about vaccine supplies and a nation that should be embarrassed for what has happened over the last four years.

There's a certain poignancy attached to his inauguration / departure date because it was the same day as my late Mum's funeral bless her. I always thought it was quite an apt bit of timing really, having survived, just, the aspirations of another megalomaniac.

It's a shame he won't get a bill for the return ferry flight of AF1 from Florida really....just to add to the, alleged, tax bills

I do not understand the United States of America.
I should - they are a powerful nation in a troubled world and we should understand them. I understand Trump - and have done so since he first came to International (rather than National) prominence. I lived through WW2 and fully understood what happens when a megalomaniac is elected into office. Nothing which he has done since has surprised me - nothing. What has surprised me is that the citiizens of the US could vote in sufficient numbers to put him into office.
In search of reassurance that my limited impressions, gained from personal contacts, of a generous, intelligent, caring nation was not totally misplaced, I turned to a number of Youtube items - specifically President Obama's addresses to an Illinois University, to the British Parliament and to the funeral of John Mc Cain. That, in turn, led me to the similar oration by Joe Biden at the same occasion. Further search brought me to an annual dinner occasion featuring speeches by various high office-holders (mainly past) including one by Jim Mattis. All demonstrated the qualities (so obviously lacking in Trump) of intelligent oratory and concern for others and the Nation. These were good people speaking well with modesty and good intent.
I do not understand the United States of America.

If you can explain how someone like Boris Johnson is the PM of the UK, you might also be able to explain what happened to America. Both countries seem to have had a massive hiccup in recent times. I suspect social media had a lot to do with it as it's the perfect vehicle for conspiracy theorists and nutcases to be heard. In the US, when you have a president who is also a conspiracy theorist, there is no end to the damage he can do.

In the US they voted for Trump the person.
In the UK they voted for a political party which chose Boris as their leading star.
Small difference.

I trust everyone attending the inauguration will be "taking the knee" in solidarity with the new VP.
