Coronavirus concern: Ship with 12 quarantined passengers arrives in New Jersey

BAYONNE, New Jersey -- A Royal Caribbean cruise ship with 12 passengers who have been quarantined due to concern over possible coronavirus infection has docked in Bayonne, New Jersey. The Anthem of the Seas arrived at 6 a.m. Friday in thick fog. Several ambulances were seen pulling up nearby.

The quarantined passengers will be tested by officials from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who were on hand to greet the arriving ship.
The passengers, all Chinese nationals, started exhibiting symptoms aboard the ship, which is returning from the Bahamas.

A federal official told WABC-TV there is no indication any of the passengers actually have coronavirus, and that these steps are being taken out of an abundance of caution.......

Steady on, old chap!

I happen to have close ties to China - similar, presumably, to yours with Hong Kong. So presumably that entitles me to feel 500x times the sadness that you feel? The difference is, I didn't choose to express it publicly, as it risks being taken the wrong way and offending others with close connections to other countries.

Third flight of British evacuees from Wuhan, arriving Sunday, will be sent into quarantine in....... Milton Keynes.

A bit closer to Brize Norton.

Royal Caribbean bans all Chinese nationals from its cruise ships

The US cruise ship company Royal Caribbean has announced that would-be passengers and crew with Chinese passports will be banned from all of its cruise ships – regardless of when they were last in the country at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak.

The measure – which also covers people with Hong Kong and Macau passports – comes amid growing concerns over the fast-spreading virus, which has killed more than 600 people and affected individuals in at least 25 countries. But it was likely to face criticism from Beijing, which has bridled at sweeping travel bans on its citizens, and from human rights activists who have denounced such restrictions as discriminatory........

Interestingly and tangential to this, the incidence of annual influenza in Japan seems to have fallen drastically, according to a doctor on TV last night. He showed the expected yearly spike against the actual flatter figures for winter 2019-2020.

In his words he said that the extra measures people are taking now, e.g. washing hands properly with sprays, soap, etc., wearing more masks, avoiding close contact, not shaking hands, touching your mouth or touching railings etc., are working, and these are exactly the same things that people should be conscious of doing every year.

It must be emphasized that this is Japan, and one doctor's observation, and this may not be holding true elsewhere.

Reported this morning that some governments are not taking it as seriously as they should:

Myanmar says to place 7 peppercorns on the tongue
Indonesia says don't work any overtime as you will feel tired
Some other worthless country has banned facemasks as they scare the populace into thinking there is an epidemic...

Why do they use the word "strange"?
Type in "Arrowe Park quarantine" and read about a similar facility in UK. The French also have such a quarantine facility somewhere on a sea shore.
Since people are isolated there, they are of course using various communication techniques to stay in touch with relatives and friends.

Fair point..I think it would be the standard story of whoever came up the headline for the piece was looking to grab clicks/hits for the sake of advertising revenue.

They probably thought "Russians in quarantine use social media in an innovative manner" wouldn't gain as much attention.

The Chinese love to expectorate here there and everywhere, so that could have been a strong vector in the last 8 weeks. Also the fact that they are the reigning smoking world champions must have had an effect on the transference of the virus into the respiratory systems of many.

I watched a news feature last night of a forced removal of a family from their apartment in Wuhan, kicking and screaming out into the street to a fridge type box on the back of a pickup to the quarantine centre. If the people didn't have the virus before that, then they would shortly after. What a mess...

Plenty of Chinese tourists here in Hanoi, all wearing facemasks. Good, then we don't have to.

New coronavirus infected 40 staff in single Wuhan hospital: study

Forty health care workers were infected with the novel coronavirus by patients at a single Wuhan hospital in January, a new study has found, underscoring the risks to those at the frontlines of the growing epidemic.

One patient who was admitted to the surgical department was presumed to have infected 10 health care workers, according to the paper that was authored by doctors at the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on Friday.

Seventeen patients who were hospitalized for other reasons also became infected by the coronavirus. A total of 138 patients got the virus in a period spanning January 1 to January 28, with hospital-associated transmission accounting for 41 percent of all cases.........

Of the 40 infected health care workers in the JAMA study, 31 worked on general wards, seven in the emergency department, and two in the ICU.

The example of the patient presumed to have infected 10 health workers highlighted the high level of danger within hospitals during the first phase of the epidemic, even though overall it is currently estimated that each patient infects on average 2.2 others.

"If true, then this confirms that some patients are likely to be far more infectious than others, and this poses further difficulties in managing their cases," said Michael Head, a global health expert at the University of Southampton said in a comment to the UK's Science Media Centre.......

French reporting 5 British tourists in a ski chalet have coronavirus. One of group had visited Singapore a month ago.

Question now will be how many contacts they have had in last two weeks and whether outbreak can be contained.

Well, that's that then. If it can spread so easily and in a pretty cold and fresh environment, then it's only a matter of time before it gets to the big cities. Contamines-Montjoie is a pleasant alpine town, this won't be good for their local economy at all.

Also affected some Brits in Majorca now - All the latest ones seem to be linked to stays or contacts with Singapore, including the UK chap diagnosed in Brighton, now in St Thomas's who just attended a business conference there....Is Singapore the next hot spot?

BTW how did your pal get on going to NZ wedding from LHR via Shanghai??

Chinese citizens are making memes and sharing their innovative - but not necessarily helpful ways to shield themselves from the virus, including wearing inflatable costumes to minimize contact with other people.

Singapore, although cramped by western standards is very ordered and clean, so it seems incongruous that there should be cases there somehow. I have extended family there with young kids and they are somewhat concerned.

The travelling Kiwi has gone off the grid, most likely because he went (perhaps his flight was exchanged for via SIN or HKG) and is in the end of the world location of the wedding (5hrs drive from AKL). At least I hope so, as to have gone and then got stuck in Shanghai would be a nightmare at this point in time.

What's happening on the fatality front?

Those infected hospital workers should represent typical healthy individuals,(the kind that survive flue)?
Then again why did the doctor hero not survive?
