I'd never remember all that. I think I'd go down with it, still grinning ear-to-ear.
Nor me, but I always thought that the drill was to invert the a/c having undone your belt, and just drop out.

Ah yes, certainly a common trait of that time period. Back in the day people were much shorter.
First time I sat in a DC-3 I thought "oh boy it's pretty cramped up there, must be a real struggle if your height 6 feet + " (I'm 5'11")

Then I saw the gear levers set up!
