The latest theory I've seen was that, completely coincidentally, Obama was going to be in town at the same time anyway.

Trump, on discovering this, couldn't cope with the idea of Obama getting large crowds of well-wishers whilst he, Trump, was either ignored or faced with an anti-Trump demo, so he had to find some way of getting out of the visit.

So he cooked up the whole Greenland thing, just so he could have some reason other than Obama for cancelling the visit.

This does sound slightly far fetched ... but on the other hand this is Trump we're talking about, and this theory would explain why Trump is now wittering about rescheduling the visit for some other time, which does rather suggest that the timing was the reason for cancellation and not Greenland.

Or is Denmark still a colonial power, content to keep a colony of native people as a remnant of past glory?
Or is America still a colonial power, content to keep a colony of native people as a remnant of past glory?

There, fixed.

Considering that all the rest of the Inuit are in Canada ('cept for Alaska) and are Canadian citizens - there are considerable ethnic and cultural ties with Greenland.
We don't want Greenland however and have no colonies or protectorates.
The USA however........

Sure about that? Ignoring Siberian Yupik?

As an aside, a few decades ago, The Turks & Caicos Islands (a British Overseas Territory) asked the Canadian Parliament to allow them to join Canada. (I thought it would have been great - our own sun destination - like Hawaii.)
We declined but they have kept offering. Nova Scotia in 2014 voted to allow them to join the province. Didn't happen.
Haiti has apparently asked as well. They were declined as well. Politely,

In 1861 the southern Confederacy expressed their desire to secede from the U.S.
That desire was declined as well. Not so politely,

So, no. Members of most federal states do not get to express their desire for secession.
I'm just not 100% sure that you'd call Denmark/Greenland either a federal or unitary state.

The country of Greenland, as an autonomous member of the Kingdom of Denmark, may be entitled to express that desire, if they so wish.

Obviously can't make their minds up ... it might have been logical for them, as a dependency of Jamaica, to stay with Jamaica in 1962.

When Trump and his fans say, "Send them back!"

Does that mean the US will return Texas to Mexico?

After all, the US did not buy Texas.

I'm pretty sure Trump will give up California ,back to Mexico, long before he offers Texas. The Mexicans will quickly find out they can't afford it.

He thinks it's OK to abuse leaders all over the world and describe nations as shit-hole countries, but gets all coy and diplomatic when he gets a robust response from Denmark. In essence his complaint is that it wasn't a sufficiently polite and diplomatic message! And he claims to be the master of the deal! Any fool can see that he went about this deal in a way guaranteed to make it impossible.

Surely Americans can see that Trump is as mad as a box of frogs? And that he driving the USA away from every democratic country into the arms of dictators who are considerably smarter than he is.
Good summary

But then who is going to protect those now democratic countries from their new found friends sucking the life out of them.?

It's like the "Godfather" movie's opening "be my friend... godfather"?

Just as well. You constitute about .05 of the world’s population but possess 9% of the worlds fresh water and you still can’t get fresh water to all your citizens. Probably shouldn’t be shopping for islands in the Caribbean until you can. Wouldn’t want you to have the same problems as we do.

That honeymoon would end right quick. I could see the residents of San Fran and LA headed for Seattle and the people’s utopia there.

Actually California would be a net giver to Mexico. It’s a net giver rather than a net taker, giving more in tax contributions than it gets in federal handouts, along with other Democrat leaning states like New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Texas is higher up the list in the “taker” column, and the top 5 are the red states of South Carolina, North Dakota, Florida, Louisiana and Alabama.

If the US wants to get rid of a few takers they’d be better off selling the Deep South to Mexico.

Aint all that cheap anymore unless you are comparing it to La Jolla (look it up) or Manhattan.

Unfair. Danes are nice people, well they were when they made Carlsberg for the first time.

Now like most Skandi's they have been neutered by Political Correctness.
