If it bleeds, it leads

Graphic content contained within the link.

Recently there was a fairly horrific car accident near my house. I heard the sound of the impact, unfortunately low speed vehicle crashes are reasonably common, so I didn't investigate.

I may be getting old, or it may be the prevalence of citizen journalism, but I don't recall quite graphic vision being broadcast. In this particular instance a person was still in the vehicle whilst it burned & died at the scene.

i don't really know if the vision adds anything to the story, especially when you consider that it is actually of a person's last moments?

For a TV News organisation it's all about 'pictures'.

With the advent of smartphones, they can get more pictures from anyone. The person filming it from a distance doesn't know that there's still someone inside while it burns.

Just because they can "get them" doesn't mean they should use them. The more they use this sort of thing, the more people will take the videos in search of their "5 minutes of fame". Reputable broadcasters should have nothing to do with such voyeuristic stuff. That person is (was) someones souse, parent, dear friend and these people don't need to stumble upon the dying moments of their loved ones.

I haven't watched the video, but from the description you posted it appears that the deceased was a car thief.
If so, this sounds like another Darwin case.

Was in Moscow years ago, late at night on the way to the hotel. There had been a crash involving several vehicles . The crew bus had slowed down but the traffic was still moving. It appeared to me, the media had arrived before the "emergency services". A cameraman was filming the victims, who were in and around vehicales. No doubt it was a nasty smash and i was appalled no one was interested in assisting victims. Pictures first or "not my job" attitude??

Wasn't that pretty well the order of play when the Princess of Wales was killed?

I'm not sure if this is recent, or from last July, when tens, possibly hundred of people were given on the spot fines for slowing down and filming a serious collision - the incident I am referring to was on the A5 north of Baden Baden, I was travelling north and left the Autobahn and cut across country.

Why we, and others can't be so straightforward I just don't understand.
