I'm confused.

If he was approaching the A149 from the west (i.e. heading east) and returning to Sandringham, his logical route would have been either to go straight across the junction onto the B1439, or turn left (north) onto the A road.

If the latter, how could a car heading south on the A149 have hit him ?

Goofer, that diagram fits some of the narrative but clearly he was travelling from Sandringham not to but clearly not on a private road. The diagram in the NZ press has the DoE travelling in the opposite direction.

If the DT is correct and the DoE was looking up the slip road from the A149 then he would have been looking directly in to Sun.

Just to add to the confusion, a man who lives 100 yards from the junction said he was returning home and came upon the aftermath and said " "The [Land Rover] was on its side on a private road. The other car was well into the hedge on the opposite side of the road."

I cannot believe that PP was not 'shadowed' by a security officer.
I believe HM and HRH do drive within the confines of Windsor Great Park without security (at least not close escort) but I don't know about Sandringham.

I may have missed it, but does anyone know where PP was travelling to, and why he found it necessary to go alone. I can't imagine he was popping out for a litre of milk!

Have a look at Wunderground.com. It used to have detailed historical data. There is a new interface and you will need to learn to get the best from it. It might give what you want.

At 3pm solar radiation was At a minimum compared with 2.50 when it was 3 times as much and also more a few minutes later. You would need better information I think regarding crash time.

Apparently, PP asked the same question.

The road from Sandringham that enters the A149 enters it on a westerly heading so he would have been heading into the sunset.
More or less true - at this time of the year the sun would be to the West of SW at 15:30 or slightly towards HRH's left, obscuring his vision of vehicles approaching from the south. However, the KIA was heading south on the A149 towards the junction and to see it HRH would have needed to look towards the north, which would have taken the sun out of his eyes. As I would interpret it, he was concentrating on trying to see if anything was coming towards him from out of the the sun, only glanced to his right, and missed seeing the KIA. There but for the grace of God go I.

So, despite all the hype we've heard, it now seems that Prince Philip wrote a personal letter of apology to the lady that was injured and had it hand delivered to her house four days after the accident.

Isn't that an admission of liability?
