Were they scousers? I should say (having spent a year in Liverpool, my only qualification here) that there is a *huge* difference between scousers and scallies (scousers are normal people..)... and I don't think they were even scallies... (who contrary to popular opinion do generally mostly behave themselves in public at least until they hit the bevy's then all bets are off).. the article says Irish?

The people concerned are very clear they are British when spoken to. Someone accused them of being Irish.

The people concerned claimed they are British or more correctly " John Johnson said he no longer felt comfortable in New Zealand. He said: 'I'm no one famous. I'm just a fat kid from England on holiday.'

A waitress claiming someone with a Liverpool accent is Irish would not surprise me to be fair as unless she has heard it all he life it is an easy mistake to make.

Ah I see now, from the article, our scally friends travelled way out of their normal zone... (10KM radius from Liverpool City Centre)... they must have been in shock.

Will anyone take them as passengers? With luck they'll get stuck there.

How can they afford to fly to NZ on holiday? They don't appear to have the earning capacity.

Most of the Scally contingent don't work (at least "work" in its usual definition) and prefer alternate revenue sources, whether Benefits (multiple), or often combined with dubious activities, suspect this is of the latter variety.

Still surprised (very) to see them so far from home.

Scouse isn't Scally... identified usually by wearing perma-tracksuits, expensive trainers and short hair (and ending each sentence without fail with "Lar"*)... they are a race upon their own.... even the Scousers avoid them....

*they also have a strange vocabulary with words like "ozzie", "bizzies", "boss", "soz" (z's feature extensively)..... as far as I could make out Asking them to repeat sentences (when I was brave enough) I could sometimes make out the odd British word.... but it was damned difficult.

As a "plastic Scouse" or "Woolly Back" (someone from close by Liverpool but not from the city), I have to say I get pissed off at this sort of stuff. First, to the O.P.; you need to show that these people really were from Liverpool. It seems to me they were probably pikeys. If so, that would answer one of the questions raised above re "where did they get the money from.." I have seen documentaries on TV where Irish traveller families have turned up in large numbers in the USA, scamming people out of their money in just the same way they do here in the UK.
Next, for Flash8, scallies doesn't refer to any particular group. It is usually used to describe someone who may be a bit of a ne'er do well, or a cocky so and so.
Scousers are people from Liverpool. Being from the Wirral I am not regarded as a Scouser while in Liverpool, perhaps when visiting my kids and grand children, all of whom are genuine Scousers. While in the Army, nobody had heard of the Wirral or even Birkenhead, so I became "Scouse".
Until someone shows this lot were definitely from Liverpool, I think an apology to Scousers might be in order here.
P.S. Re travellers/pikeys, I spent a couple of days with my brother in Ireland last week. While swallowing a few pints in a bar just south of Sligo, on the coast, the topic of travellers came up. My brother asked if they have any trouble from them in this area and the answer was more or less "Not any more", coupled with knowing looks, nods and winks. It was nice to see they are despised by their own just as much as they are over here.

Nobody on this thread has accused the Scousers of anything (although the title should be changed).... In fact I have gone out of the way to defend them (many of whom I have as friends from my year as a postgrad at Liverpool Uni) but I'm not gonna defend the scallies... and I can spot one a mile off (or usually more than one as they roam usually in packs).

Well, apparently they've been identified as from Liverpool, and named here Unruly tourists speak out as deportation looms They strongly deny being gypsies or Irish though. There's some video of them if anyone wants to try and identify the exact accents. They've managed to piss off an entire nation, and one as famously easy-going and friendly as New Zealand at that! They were even causing trouble on the flight over, being obnoxious to passengers and crew, failing to follow crew instructions and generally making life seriously unpleasant for everyone around them, so I don't imagine Cathay Pacific will be too keen to have them on board for the return trip. Good riddance now they're being deported.

New Zealand Herald 16 Jan
"John Johnson, his brother, David, as well as their partners and children, including a young baby, and mother Eileen Doran, of Liverpool"

Scousers, one and all.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has confirmed the group have been issued a deportation notice.

Latest reports in the NZ Herald .............

Police allege she stole a can of Red Bull from the Caltex on December 31 - and returned to the same service station on January 3 to steal a four-pack of Red Bull, white rope and a pair of sunglasses valued at $50.

She is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court this morning and her family members were seen arriving at the court house before proceedings begin.

Family member John Johnson told the Herald yesterday they were all from England, not Ireland, as had been widely reported.

How can they afford to fly to NZ on holiday? They don't appear to have the earning capacity.
The family also denied not paying for food at restaurants with Johnson instead claiming that his grandfather was the 10th richest man in England.

“Scousers” “scallies”.
Call them for what they are, not cute, clever names.
They are - scum.
