Piston engine speed record attempt.

3km record was beaten but not beyond the 1% margin required to hold the new record.

They had it apart thursday and tested it friday for an attempt on saturday.

You can see the left bank is off in the pic.

pass speeds are.....

554.69
527.34
528.48
515.62
Average is 531.53 mph to Rare Bear's 528mph.

Apparently, the engine was giving up on the last pass.

We'll see if they put the other engine in and try again in a few days or show up at reno to race.

On a side note, Czech Mate is for sale.

It sure was a beautiful aircraft

Pilot is Stevo Hinton, son of Steve Hinton, erstwhile record holder at 499mph in the Griffon-powered Red Baron. It's in the blood alright...

Phenomenal effort and while its been modified, pretty much an airframe and engine designed over 70 years ago. Apparently they achieved 565mph in a shallow dive.

Wonder what Vmca is in that twin.

The next one is a high-speed lesson on Merlin field repairs :-)

Bally heck! You wouldn't want to suddenly apply full power from a normal approach speed in that!

I'm pretty sure they didn't use full power for take off and under race power they'd have the speed to handle it.
Remember that VMC is directly related to engine power.
Less power equals lower VMC

Ask Steve Hinton. He put Red Baron into the dirt with a seized engine and pushing four paddles in flat pitch. We thought he was dead. Mr. Miracle.

The twin is the Pond Racer built by Burt Rutan. It had a lot of issues with the engines and eventually crashed at Reno sadly killing Rick Brickert.

I'm neither a test pilot/engineer or aerodynamicist so do please correct me if I have this wrong.
Since the max lift on the fin/rudder is proportional to V squared isn't
Vmca ∝ √Eng Thrust?
e.g. If VMC is 160kn and you double the thrust then it would become 225kn and not 320kn.

Job done. The all-time piston single speed record was set Saturday when Steve Hinton Jr. flew Voodoo, a highly modified P-51 Mustang, at an average speed of 531.53 mph over four runs at Clarks Ranch in remote central Idaho. His fastest run was 554.69 mph. His average speed beat Lyle Shelton’s record of 528.3 mph set in 1989 in Rare Bear.

Not done......has to be 533 or more to beat the old record.

They have a record for their weight class but you have to beat the overall record by more than 1%.
