A large percentage of phone numbers used by scammers come from exploiting poorly maintained or poorly configured private company PABX/PBX systems. The telcos are helpless at detecting them as scam numbers as they simply have sold a number range to these companies. It's a very similar situation with the internet and poorly set up company e-mail relays.

This doesn't make the telcos blameless, they really do need to up their efforts to put a complete stop to this sort of thing rather just focusing on making huge profits. But having experience the industry first hand and seen what a bunch of planks they are I wouldn't bet on anything changing on their side for another decade.

I carry two phones around with me, one has an O2 UK number on Int'l roaming, and the other a Russian MegaFon 4G SIM that I use daily and for CIS roaming.

MegaFon Moscow (Mobile GSM/4G) 2003 - present
Number of unsolicited calls in fifteen years = ZERO (other than accidental misdialing).

O2 UK 2006 - present (Roaming)
Almost daily from unsolicited callers - has got so bad that I simply don't answer any more (costs me time, and money, incoming roaming not cheap). Seems to have grown the last few years quite a bit.

This unsolicited calling lark has got well out of control in the UK!

I’ve had three today on my landline:

01493737209
01263612414
02086813986

All from Asians called Jennifer, James and David. Two from Talktalk, one from Microsoft. All telling me my computer is sending out error messages - really?!

i asked James if he could identify himself as I wanted to be sure he was genuine before I handed over control of my laptop. He gave me a random 7 digit number followed by a several letters, which apparently is a security code. What I’m supposed to check it against, or how I verify it, I haven’t a clue.

He was very keen for me to hold down the Windows and type in the letters CMD. When I wouldn’t comply, he started to get rather frustrated with me and his manner became very curt. Are these scammers on commission or target driven, as they seem to be getting more and more aggressive if you’re not sucked in immediately?

Has a call today on my landline.
Asian spoken lady claiming to be from the Cyber Crime department, and wanted to discuss my Broadband line being used for immoral purposes. I initially played along, then asked her which country she represented, which she replied "Your country". First mistake!
I then asked if she knew who my provider was. Reply was "I don't care, as you have breached the law". Mmmmm
I then asked for her security number and name, to which she replied "why do you need this?". I replied to prove you are genuine.
The response I got was "Get off my f'ing line" and she hung up.
Shame I didn't play along a little longer.

They're just stupid. A non-stupid salesperson spots when they're on a loser and immediately drops the call and moves on to the next punter.

But perhaps they wouldn't be criminals in the first place if they weren't stupid.

Had a call today from a lady with a 'posh' Indian accent asking for me by name ... in English. I asked who wanted to know and she replied immediately that she was from Network Security and .... so I interrupted her to tell me that there was no security problem with my computer, no security problem with my house and I didn't want any insulation for one euro (the latest wheeze in France); She snapped back that they weren't into home security and put the phone down on me ...

Next ....................................

As these scammers are trying to steal from me I have no problems winding them up.

What gets the best results - screaming, yelling, etc is firstly I play along with them, and then say
"Yes, I can see the windows key but can I ask you question? Do you family and friends know that you are a thief and steal from people? Are your parents proud of you?"

Do you know, Iíve thought about that approach too. Culturally, many of the Asian countries place great store on respect and reverence to their senior citizens. I might try and prick a few consciences by asking how they would feel if an elderly relation of theirs lost their life savings to a thief and that it makes no difference whether the money was stolen from a purse or a bank account? Itís still larceny whatever way you look at it.

Or maybe these people see The West as a justifiable and easy target?

In French I assume? Quite surprised, as I thought 99%+ of the scammer calls were in English (and mostly from the Indian subcontinent).

You should have said " You make it sound like using it for immoral purposes is a bad thing"................

Et bien croyez-moi .... sorry, start again ... Oh believe me! We have our own delightful band of scammers, usually offering house insulation for the sum of 1 Euro, or an anomaly has been detected in our medical files ......... let alone those from Senegal and Dakar with interesting accents! My favourite lot are the Convent San Lorenzo from Italy who offer trial packages of gastronomic goodies, but nearly always phone on public holidays .... usually those of Obligation according to the Roman Catholic Church. I do enjoy telling them how they are sinning by working when they should be in church .... and a bit more besides ... in French and/or in Italian!

We have a scam in Canada right now where they pretend to be from our tax department, threatening jail time if we do not give them our credit card number to pay overdue taxes and penalties.

Funnily enough, they do not know the name of the person they are calling to do this threatening, and they ask you for your name to look it up.

Seeing as they don't seem to speak French as one of our illustrious Federal Civil Servants would, I always give a false French name.

This has happened to me twice now, but unlike the previous posters I have not been able to last more than a few minutes without breaking into laughter after they look up Michel Le Souris. and say there are such and such amounts due!

I had a scam call from a woman saying my MS system had some problems, after a couple of minutes I just said you must be pulling my leg to which she replied ........... "it is not long enough" and hung up!
After that, when I recognise the call is from overseas I answer with "Police department how may I direct your call?" to which they would respond by immediately hanging up.
