When did this happen? The road near Punakaikai has recently been blocked by a landslide and the reason why there were no rides offering may have been that there was no through traffic.

I would be as "Happy as Larry" to find myself stuck in such a wonderful looking place..... the Froggy needs whipping with a Blackthorn branch..then he'd have something to be angry about..!

In my teens I did a fair bit of hitching, mainly in the UK, but once down through Belgium, Holland and Germany as far as Heidelberg. Swapping hitchhiking tales with others, the general opinion was that France was the worst country in NW Europe for thumbing a lift, and there were stories of hitchers taking days to advance a few km. Seems like this bloke was getting the same sort of treatment he'd have got at home.

You have to put a bit of effort in to upset your average Kiwi. I hitchhiked the South Island once and had no problems. I had offers of places to stay, farm visits etc etc. My take on this, the guy is a f%^kwit ......

Just read the Police have charged him and confiscated his passport, I'm laughing so much I'm hurting haha!

He also told us he hadnít eaten for two days so that could have contributed to him losing the plot.Ē
To be fair, I could get quite cranky as well after not eating for 2 days.

Where does that fit with not getting a lift?

The level of entitlement that others are responsible to provide you with free transportation on demand is simply stunning. When I traveled in New Zealand I thought the people were wonderful, but then I wasn't expecting to be hauled around, housed or fed at their expense.

Neither was I when I hitchhiked around there many years ago, but I was. I found the Kiwis to be the most hospitable people around. You'd have to work hard to upset them, and if he couldn't get a lift, he must have been doing it wrong.

Funny you should mention Wawa ON . I was in that part of the World yesterday. Mind you wasn't really looking for hitch hikers , more the hydro lines as I putted around low level in a B2 . But que e'st la f##k does a French hitch hiker in Kiwiland gotta do with Wawa????

You just have to wonder at the feeling of entitlement some Europeans exhibit when traveling around a country they consider "of their own level".

Think I'll wait for incoming.

Why did he just stay in the same place and not try walking? Also a local said he
was only there for 2 days not 4.
