The rate you guys are deliberately and accidentally shooting each other with legally held guns would seem to suggest there is still quite a bit of learning and training to be done stateside.
Training is an ongoing process. Always something new you can learn, from weapons safety to breathing techniques and everything in between.
There's a .50 cal for sale just across the border in Yuma SFFP, a bit rich for my blood. Continue your road trip about another 12 hours south and we'll split it.

And now you're acknowledging that training is taking place. A small improvement over your earlier position that no training was taking place. Baby steps, but I'll take it.

As regards the .50 cal nice thought but we are only going as far down the PCH as Long Beach on this trip before heading to Sedona, Vegas and Tahoe.

Two John Jay football players who appear to have deliberately hit a referee have been suspended - San Antonio Express-News
This is a thing unheard of. It simply isn't done.
A symptom of what's ailing our social system. It comes from the same world view as "kill the cops, because reasons." This isn't just a case of bad coaching. These two kids weren't raised right. That too is far too common of a malady.
Two John Jay High School football players who appear to have deliberately tackled a referee during a game Friday night, have been suspended from school as well as the team, officials said Sunday.

Just watched it on the breakfast news in our Oregan hotel, what on earth were the two boys thinking? The report says the ref just ejected two of their team mates but the actions of both boys attacking the unsuspecting ref from behind are cowardly and disgraceful, worth a lifetime ban from all sport in my humble opinion!

I am glad to hear that charges will be pressed. This is way, way out of bounds.

This is newsworthy because it isn't just rare, it's almost non existent. It is so far out of bounds as to be in the realm of "are you kidding me, they did what?" In all the years I've been involved with or interested in High School football, which is about 45, starting with the first one Dad took me to in Virginia, never heard of this -- ever. If it has happened before, it's still an extremely rare occurrence.

So as most of the gun deaths are gangs shooting each other, plus suicides how is mandatory training going to reduce gun deaths or indeed sheer stupidity?
Meanwhile, in peaceful not scary UK a record number of weapons were confiscated at the Notting Hill Carnival.
Concentrate on the why, not the how

Yes, maybe it would save a few people. But plenty would die when they need to protect themselves from a crazy ex-husband, and are denied that right because they haven't taken the ten year 'training course'.
Besides which, you can be sure that any training course imposed by anti-gun-nuts would based around Communist self-criticism sessions. 'Why do you want a gun?' 'Because my ex-husband said he'd kill me.' 'Bzzt. Badthink. Fail!'

You'll excuse my confusion as you didn't (short of a quick edit) in the post mentioning training, but it's noted now.
That's quite the meandering route. While in Northern Arizona, make an effort to visit Jerome, well worth the diversion.

Apologies for the thread drift.
A real football match saw a goalie punch the referee and the referee died.
This was in Utah.
The goalie was seventeen.
The judge sent the goalie to prison until he was 21. He also had to have a photo of the referee in his cell and to write to the referee's family every week.

MG23 - I am a little intrigued by your statement that infers that divorced women should be armed to protect themselves from ex husbands. An American woman living in a house with a gun is eleven times more likely to be shot dead than one living in a house with no guns. Can you explain why divorced women in the UK are not being killed in large numbers as they are not permitted a gun for self defence? I note you live in Canada - the gun control laws seem to work there reasonably well.

This is all very well, but what I want to hear, from you amateur psychopathologists, is how you have diagnosed this "Sickness in US Society." So far we have heard a certain amount of whingeing about guns, a bit of crowing from the moral high ground from those who don't know any better, but very little about sickness, when it's sickness that is the chosen topic.
I guess it's that we really aren't quite so "sick" as all that, although it's clear that we do have a problem. It's unclear to me how people who choose to witter on about this from abroad expect to bring about any solution to this problem for the USA.
It's usually having to listen to moralistic turkeys who insist that our poisonous foreign policy and our drive for global hegemony is ruining things wherever they live, even when that is some desolate landscape littered with sheep dung in the further reaches of the Antipodes. Here and now, how about getting back on topic to tell us more about our "sickness" and to propose a cure. Not palliative measures, such as giving up our beloved guns, but a way to lose our desire to have such an insane quantity of the damned things! Should we switch to sheep, perhaps? That seems to lead to other forms of sickness, forms I am not at liberty to discuss here.

Now, now!
Gertrude, your lack of compassion towards the sick is really shocking! We got the diagnosis, that we are sick, and now we are searching for a cure. Scolding won't help, this rubbing our noses in it over umpteen pages.
I tell you, more in sorrow than in anger, that we now seem to have been diagnosed here by a group of charlatans, quacks.
In fact, you lot seem to have just as many problems as we do, albeit different problems. We might have trouble pulling off our cowboy boots after a tough day of kicking ass and taking names; you lot must have to worry about some bully coming up and eating your lunch: Russia, North Korea, Indonesia, even.
No, do not bother to tell us here whatever trouble the panty-waist lifestyle you have perversely chosen brings with it. That does not cause us to view you with compassion, actually.
If it's anything really serious, and if you are in some sort of defense alliance with the USA as most of you probably are, then swallow your pride (assuming that you have any to begin with) and give us a call on the hotline. US Marines are on standby to handle pretty much anything, although a certain amount of property damage is to be expected then.
Meanwhile, if you don't have a cure for this "sickness," why not tend to your own knitting?
