An Uptick in Lasers and Commercial Flights

In the area of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania there has been a substantial uptick in the incidents of [email protected] being pointed at commercial airliners. There have been 20 such incidents, in the area mentioned, within the past week alone.

Now, I don't know a helluva lot about [email protected] but it would seem to me that in order to "paint" a commercial jet the [email protected] would have to be pretty powerful, no?

And how much of a danger is this to the flight deck crew? Are there no defenses against it other than to look away?

The danger with [email protected] 'pointers' is that the beam is concentrated (ie it doesn't spread like a non-laser beam).

The intensity is determined by the power - some are modest, but others are much stronger.

Initial eye contact will dazzle, but continued exposure can damage the eye.

G-CPTN:

But for a [email protected] to reach the altitudes of aircraft, wouldn't they have to be pretty powerful?

brock, one African-looking chap demonstrated the Power of one of these to me from the Spanish Steps in Rome by lazing/painting the dome of St Peter's Basilica, so they have he range. The "dot" would have been several feet across, and still distinct. So the answer is, powerful enough in clear air.

Dude decided not to pursue his salesmanship with me when I offered to show him how fast he could get to the bottom of the aforementioned Steps.

Love it! Did you also make mention of how painful it is to have two broken legs as well?

It still spreads, but not as fast as light from a bulb. For example, the [email protected] beams used to measure the distance to the Moon are about 10km wide by the time they get there.
