"...they might, but that doesn't make it right. I think you need to read up on the proposal: it is about personal abuse, humiliation, vilification relating to race and ethnicity. Speaking or writing in bigoted or racist terms should and cannot be tolerated in any civilised society, especially as the targets of such epitaphs are mostly unable to respond. Not only that, others are stirred up and act accordingly. There is already enough in our society to divide us - we don't need the ratbags of the left or right to be given a free hand to spew their hatred and/or bigotry."

No, it doesn't make it right but the left are quite happy to complain about this but as I and SOPS have pointed out, it is quite OK for them to do it.

"Speaking or writing in bigoted or racist terms should and cannot be tolerated in any civilised society, especially as the targets of such epitaphs are mostly unable to respond."

Really. Ever been called a "whitey" by an Abo ?
I am quite able to respond but that and other "racist" comments they make are part of the current Aboriginal culture. And if you think they are racist to whites, see how they treat half bloods and less !!! Treat worse than dirt.

"There is already enough in our society to divide us - we don't need the ratbags of the left or right to be given a free hand to spew their hatred and/or bigotry.""

But it's OK for Muslims to do it and we can't respond ?

A bit like Obama got away with so much because anyone who dared criticize him was called racist.

I might not start it and might well walk away but no law on earth would stop me defending myself or others, including other cultures like Aboriginies if I thought it warranted.

The problem is, you open your mouth in a negative way towards other cultures, especially Aboriginies and automatically you are classed as a racist, whether what you say is true or not !!!

While I respect your opinions, I cannot agree with them! It would be good to 'chew the fat' wit you over a tinny or two but that's not possible. I won't join further debate as it's too complex for Jet Blast.

Ken, no problems

Except it won't be a tinny as I don't drink beer but would make sure the bottles of gin are full

All quite expected really.
Obviously Abbott thinks he is king John, Morrison would be the Sheriff of Notts,
Friar Tuck is Hockey and Maid Marion with out a doubt is chris Pyne.
Can't wait for apprentices to be renamed Pages.
Kind regards

Which would make Bill Shorten, Robin Hood and Albo, Little John?

Surely Plibersek would be Maid Marion?

Pyne would be just the minion killed off in scene three.

But what of Dennis Moore and the lupins?

Bill Shorten, Robin Hood ??????

Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

Shorten steals from everybody for his own benefit,
just like most lefty leaders !

I was thinking of Dennis Moore as well!!

Many scenes from The Holy Grail come to mind.

We already have Sir Les and Dame Edna, I think that's enough.

Fear not,all is not lost.
It was announced this morning that ex Assistant Treasurer in both the Rudd/Gillard Australian Governments, David Bradbury has been appointed as 'Head of Tax Policy and Statistics at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development at their headquarters in Paris.
Mr. Bradbury said, following his appointment that," The role will allow me to contribute to the global public policy debate and pursue my passion for tax policy".
Nice to know that the W.W.T. is still available for all these non entities to get their snouts into.

Can anyone, without using google or other reference sources, list the Australian Honours in order of merit?

Failing that, what was the top honour before Abbott reintroduced Knights and Dames?

AC
AO
AM
OAM
VC
SG
MG
Some sort of commendation for Bravery - Cpl Ben Roberts Smith VC, MG
was awarded it this year.

Prior to Abott's bizarre decision, the top honor was that of a companion of the Order if Australia to which I think there was an annual quota of something like 15 appointees. The next is an Officer of the AO with a much larger annual quota. Following that is a Member of the OA (AM) followed by the unlimited OAMs. There are many and varied awards for the military, police, ambos, SES, firies and public servants. Perhaps, after all, the Bunyip Aristocracy is truly alive and well now that we have reverted to the medieval times of Knights and Dames!

Ooohh that sounds so exciting, I'd rather a nighthood. Sounds more important and is very Australian as knight is shorter, bit like abreviated names.

Should have got rid of the Dame bit though and made the Knight bit bisexual

I made a mistake.

Cpl RS got a commendation for distinguished service which is down the list somewhat.

The commendation I mentioned is the commendation for bravery.

I don't really care. If they want to deem people OAs (complete with dinner plate to hang around the neck) Dames or Koalas in Chief it's all the same thing, ie a grown up version of a Scouts badge . Australians already admire and respect the people who deserve it, like Cos, Ian Frazer et al.

IMO the gongs are usually more about politicians of the day gonging themselves by reflecting in the glory of the great people who already have the people's respect, by handing those great people a piece of tin and/or a fancy title (and getting photographed/reported while doing so ).

However, as an avowed republican, progressive thinker/leftie, MIL of the Leader of the Opposition etc etc etc, I think that Bryce has made herself look a bit silly by accepting this title. It's like hearing that Alan Joyce has become a TWU member; not illegal, it's a free country etc, but just a bit weird and maybe a little hypocritical , both for the GG for accepting it and the government for offering it.
Just my HO.

I have no opinion on military honours; I think that should be decided by the military. They do the hard yards, so let them decide what the gongs should be called and who they should be awarded to. The rest of us should be ready to cheer accordingly.

I was wondering if and when someone was going to comment on this
because I haven't seen anything in the papers. I agree with you.

As long as the "new" awards are not dished out to Pollies and only to deserved people, it should go OK. But I doubt it will last, nature of the beast and all that.

Here is a question for you.

Do you think Bryce did a good job as GG of Aus ?

A fair few reckon she spent more than she should (sky high flower budgets ) and traveled more than she really needed to.

According to some, one hiccup with that speech of hers where some think she over stepped the line.

BTW, I think HM The Queen would be having a quiet chuckle at the moment over all this !
