Well while that was going on Audi won by about 10 seconds from BMW after twenty fours hours of a most engrossing Spa 24 hours. Dr Ludwig Kraus looked extremely pleased.

Reading between the lines here I take it that Rosberg didn't win in Hungary. Hurrah! Ricciardo is the real deal and apparently a very nice guy to boot.

Various pundits suggesting alternative outcomes.

It's relatively simple to look at one competitor's times and suggest a what if (and I agree with the main suggestion that one driver impeded his team-mate by not pulling-over and allowing him to pass (which would have slowed the first driver) but they are battling against each other as well as for the team.

If the overtake had been allowed (or insisted on) then the team could have expected higher points - but at the expense of the first driver.

But, who knows what other drivers and teams might have done differently when faced with the altered circumstances? - and there might have been collisions . . .

I believe it was pay-back time.

The team has a lead of 170 points. They can afford to drop 2 or 3.

Great race to watch but what a miserable couple of **** are driving for Brackley United this season..........well done Ricciardo

nb Best wishes to vintage racer Sid Hoole who had a 'big one' yesterday at Silverstone driving the original 1973 Ensign F1 car - looked nasty from where we were sitting.

at the time LH was told to let him pass NR was +/- 1.3 seconds behind. LH's comment, "Tell him to close up then" was perfectly reasonable. Why should he slow right down to be passed? A different matter if they were nose to tail.

Well done Ricciardo though

I guess the logic was that since Lewis was going the distance on his tyres, he would automatically regain track position when Nico came in for his pit stop. Although looking at Nico's subsequent pace, you wonder whether under that scenario he'd have caught up with Lewis more quickly and had a couple of extra laps to pass him on fresher tyres. Unless, of course, Mercedes had ordered Nico to return the favour..... Hopefully with hindsight the team will understand that asking Lewis to slow down would have compromised his battle with Nando.

What is it with McLaren? They have a long history of poor tactical decision making. Jenson was doing OK, but the team buggered his race up by gambling on an event completely outside their control. If he'd been at the back of the pack, then there would have been no harm in a speculative throw of the dice, but not when you're comfortably in the points.

‘Team orders’ at this early stage? I think I’ll be watching snooker or darts next year.

Rosberg on BBC sport a couple of days ago talking about him and Hamilton:
Rosberg, who was talking in an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, said: "It's a great battle we have fighting each other. It's very close, very intense.*
It wouldn't be such a great battle if Hamilton simply let you pass because of team orders.

Bernie to 'bribe' German court.

Formula 1 billionaire Bernie Ecclestone has offered to pay a German bank £20m to halt a criminal trial in which he is accused of bribery, his lawyers said.

Prosecutors in Munich, where the 83-year-old motorsport magnate went on trial in April over claims he paid a £26m bung to secure a business deal, are still mulling whether to accept the proposal.

Under German law, charges can be withdrawn by prosecutors during some forms of criminal trial if all sides reach an agreement. The authorities had earlier rejected a request from Mr Ecclestone’s representatives for the case against him to be thrown out on the grounds of a lack of evidence.

The Briton’s lawyers said he was now willing to pay 25m euros (£20m) to state-owned Bayerische Landesbank, which had become a major stakeholder in F1 in 2002, to conclude the proceedings.

He agrees to pay the bank, the bank gets the money. The bank turn the offer down, poor little Bernie goes to jail and the German Government get the fine.

The bank will no doubt turn the offer down as it is immoral to turn a blind eye to criminal behaviour?
