Good things I noticed in the photos of the Lotus 79 were......Not much aero grip, lots of mechanical grip,a proper steering wheel and shock,horror....a manual gear lever. Oh to go back to those regulations.

Lotus 79

Got to agree, lovely car, manual box etc. but not much aero? It was the first fully developed ground effect car with sliding skirts to seal the underbody air flow. It had so much aero that 'jumper' Jarier nearly won a race with it!

I reckon Chapman, had he still been around today, would be giving the rest a good run for their money.

McLaren can now forget getting any useful development feedback from him for the 2012 car ..................

Reserve driver time.

A good start for Red Car
Not so good when you read the rest of the article
Alonso's best time was the second fastest of the week for a 2012 car - 0.429secs slower than the quickest, set by Lotus driver Romain Grosjean.

The Franco-Swiss and his car continued to impress on Friday, with the fifth fastest time. His team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, returning to F1 after two years in rallying, also impressed with the fastest time on the first day.

Lotus trackside operations director Alan Permane said the team had had an "exceptional" test.

"We did 100 laps a day - more than anyone else with a 2012 car," he said. "To achieve that is really good.

"More than the pace - because it's difficult to work out what the others are doing because you don't know what fuel loads they're on - the drivers are happy with the car.
Everybody now goes home, crunches the numbers, redesigns half the car and comes back with something completely different.

Trulli out, Petrov in

The Trulli Train hits the buffers at last

pitpass - Petrov replaces Trulli at Caterham

Of course I'm sure it has nothing to do with having seriously wealthy sponsors

Seems it was on the cards.

I'm sure Petrov will be more entertaining than Trulli.

Petrov is ambitious, whereas Trulli seemed to be somewhat 'staid' IMO.

With 40 minutes remaining, here's how things stand.
Jenson Button McLaren 1:23.510 50 laps
Sergio Perez Sauber 1:23.820 103
Mark Webber Red Bull 1:23.830 93
Romain Grosjean Lotus 1:23.959 58
Nico Rosberg Mercedes 1:23.992 113
Jean-Eric Vergne Toro Rosso 1:24.216 98
Paul di Resta Force India 1:24.305 83
Felipe Massa Ferrari 1:24.318 81
Vitaly Petrov Caterham 1:24.876 116
Pastor Maldonado Williams 1:25.587 52
but:-
Romain Grosjean bolts on a set of soft tyres on his Lotus and pops in a 1:23.252 to usurp the McLaren driver.

I think testing times are very misleading. The top teams usually sandbag. I remember, back in the old days, how good Minardi used to look off season

It looks like the money politics of Formula Bernie is off and racing once again.

He is now saying that if Australia and Melbourne in particular does not change it's scheduled race to a night race they will lose the event to another country.

I don't know if it's true or not but the story I read also said that BE gets $25 million himself or his company for Melbourne to hold the rights to have the race.

Not a bad little effort is it if it's true and we all know that what we read in the papers is not always the truth or accurate. But if it's true that he makes $25 million per race then 20 races in 2012 gives him or his company $500 million. That can't be right could it?

Whether he would cancel the race for not changing to a night race or it's another ploy to get Melbourne to cough up some more money for the right to hold a Grand Prix keeps the media in a job at least.
