Those IR vids of the front tyres was fantastic, amazing to see how small the contact patch was in a straight line
I think what you are looking at is where the tyre is flexing between the face of the tyre and the sidewall. The flexing causes heat at that point. When a tyre deflates, the energy that goes into that point often causes the tyre to split along that line.

On a straight, the contact patch will be the inner half of the tyre face dependent on the camber angle of the suspension. The full face of the tyre will be in contact with the tarmac when cornering and the load on the suspension alters the geometry.

Anyway, a more important point is have they got some fit pit babes to brighten up the grid ?

Boos for Vettel, pandemonium for Alonso, and cheers for Webber... The Italians don't sit on the fence do they?

Reprimand for DiResta for the accident.

Well done Weber, especially with the damage after being squeezed off the track by Alonso. (other way round would there have been a penalty?)

Pretty classless of the Italian crowd to boo Vettel just because he was better than Alonso today. Matter of fact, taking a look at the driver standings, Vettel has been consistently better than Alonso so far this season.

Another competent drive from the German champion. Even after over-cooking the first turn a bit and providing himself the opportunity to throw it all away, Vettel proceeded to establish his usual lead and just drive away. Actually it was quite a disciplined drive considering his penchant for pushing harder than the team wants him to. Just a nice smooth drive in the park. And he DID look smooth even before the team warned of possible impending equipment problems.

Both red cars had an amazing start! Even the second Red Bull got off the grid pretty well and earned a respectable finishing position in spite of gear troubles. What a nice drive by Hulkenberg, certainly not hurting his chances in the running for Massa's seat if it indeed becomes available.

As to the Italian race fans being less than welcoming to Vettel? Not unexpected at all and no more lacking in sporting spirit or indeed class than one has come to expect in today's social environment!

Silly season seems to have started.
Raikonen to Ferrari and Alonso going the other way. A done deal according to sections of the German press

Surely not? Massa going to Lotus I could understand; Alonso seems unlikely (albeit he does have previous there).

BBC reporting that Raikkonen to Ferrari is a done deal, with Hulkenburg filling the vacant slot at Lotus.

Andy S - I tend to think your version is most accurate. Can't see Alonso driving a Lotus, but Hulkenburg - Definitely.

If lotus have difficulty in giving Kimi some financial guarantees, for sure they cannot afford Alonso unless he brings massive sponsorship. Hulkenberg with Lotus for 2014?

The suggestion is that Renault would fund Alonso to get him into one of their cars
