It seems absurd to me that if he had been put on any kind of list then why did he receive American citizenship last year?
Far be it for me to defend CBS (they of the verified false but we're gonna go with it anyway GWB was AWOL papers), but if you read the article, the terrorist was removed from the list in 2009.

He gained his citizenship in 2009.

I can see it happening quite readily.

And who's State Department and Homeland Security Department were they in 2009?

And who directed the culling of the watch lists?

pigboat,

Brilliant essay.

Even after Shahzad's arrest, the Associated Press, CNN and The Washington Post attached huge significance to the problems the young jihadist had had keeping up his mortgage payments. Just as, after Maj. Hasan, the "experts" effortlessly redefined "post-traumatic stress disorder" to apply to a psychiatrist who'd never been anywhere near a war zone, so now the housing market is the root cause of terrorism: Subprime terrorism is a far greater threat to America than anything to do with certain words beginning with I- and ending in –slam.

Incidentally, one way of falling behind with your house payments is to take half a year off to go to Pakistan and train in a terrorist camp.
Perhaps Congress could pass some sort of jihadist housing credit?

Well actually he didn't find a parking spot in Times Square, he kind of just made one. He just left the vehicle sitting and running in a No Parking zone.

No exactly the thing to do if one wants to avoid attention. Course McViegh did the same thing with the Ryder Truck, but his bomb went off.

So, in summary, "the war against terror" is progressing just fine and dandy, or it is "up against the wall motherfecker"

Personally, I would opt for the latter, sadly

A petrol and propane bomb was left in a sports utility vehicle
Must be a case for banning SUVs.

Mixed metaphor alert!

Perhaps the sandals are on the wrong feet there but "Up against the wall..." has to do with the cause of "black liberation," coming as it does from a poem by a prominent black activist.

The person to be put "up against the wall" should be a white one, being robbed by a black one in the name of some sort of racial payback. (After the line misquoted comes something like, "This is a stickup!")

I suppose you could go look it up if you like. It was a big deal in the Sixties, when the poet went to jail primarily for being a PITA but secondarily for writing the poem. Almost no one had heard of jihad at that time nor had the judge heard of the protection afforded freedom of speech by the Constitution.

LeRoi Jones, later Amiri Baraka, inspired by a visit to (where else) Cuba... El G, you must be slipping to have missed that one.
