The whole purpose of the demonstration that day was to lure the troops into a confrontation where they would be targets for snipers. This was standard IRA procedure during the Troubles, according to a relation of mine who served there.
It seems that the soldiers opened fire first, but the resultant deaths also served the IRA cause well. Their leaders would have considered it a worthy sacrifice.

Doesn't mean in either case it didn't happen.

Brexiteers in warning to German business - BBC News
"... British business will cope with whatever is thrown at them" - but - "If the German Chancellor and EU leaders continue down the road of negativity and threats when negotiating with Britain, German business and the German economy will pay a high price."

Those wanting to use comedy WW2 bits as a parallel to this should reflect on how that confrontation ended. Are they predicting the same parallels and outcome if this matter now degenerates to a 'confrontation of words'?

Then as the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland he would have achieved exactly what he would have been expected to achieve while at the same time deploring the fate of other nations people.

Every time Corbyn makes himself look a total chump, it is hard to believe that he can do any worse......but wait!

A demonstrably untrue statement straight out of the Trumpian playbook that the Labour leader is currently copying.
Nelson Mandela praised Thatcher’s role in helping to end Apartheid, famously saying:
“She is an enemy of Apartheid. We have much to thank her for.”
Amhed Kathadra, one of Mandela’s closest friends, said Thatcher was instrumental in ending Apartheid:
“Her word did count – I’m sure of it… Mrs Thatcher wasn’t one of our oppressors.”
F W de Klerk said of Thatcher’s contribution to the end of Apartheid:
“She exerted more influence on what happened in South Africa than any other political leader”

And just when you thought they could not be more screwed up

Owen Smith declares his constituents too stupid to understand Brexit and despite them voting Leave he is going to defy them and vote against Art 50.
Long may this kind of thing continue.

The greatest pleasure that comes from every barking utterance from Komrad Jezza is the knowledge that one or two folk will be hanging their heads in shame at the idea this guy is their leader.

Unfortunately these sort of things will only make a difference if the constituencies that these MPs represent do actually vote them out, so either the likes of this one has another job, or so confident that they will get back in at the next election that they are just grandstanding to get their names in print, or I suppose they might just be barking.

This would be the same Owen Smith who voted in favour of holding a Referendum in the first place.
