18 Hours in the old Athens was hard to take. Geneva would be ok provided it was all in one country - the problems that's caused me...However, the award goes to Zurich for it's impossible to understand transit system & miserable spotty arsed security monkey who made me take my shoes off & thus miss my flight.

Zante and Sharm-el-shiekh tie as the worst 'hot place' airports I've ever been to and have cooked in!
T3 at LHR is the absolute pits due to the apalling layout and facilities.
However I've also come to find that anything with a BA presence always has to be endured rather than enjoyed

Miami. Was asked by security if I had a valid British Passport in date. I had to point out they were looking at my M1 visa (US issue) and my passport details were on the back page.

On the subject of Airport toilets though.......What a shock I got when I got to Dubai for the first time....expecting clean fresh bogs, my Lawd, oh well . I guess clean toilets are for infidels only.

Re: Worst airport you have ever been through (as PAX)

Dulles, Terminal C - Lack of affordable transport to the airport, ridiculous 'tundra-truck' shuttles to the terminal (they look like somthing out of the original The Thunderbirds!), was booked first class with AA but no lounge facilities available, and sparrows flying throughout the terminal leaving their little calling cards everywhere.

Philadelphia - passed through the anal probing process at terminal C with the rest of our (foreign based and booked) party - took 30 minutes to get to the metal detectors then another 20 minutes of probing after that. We then we set off in pairs for Terminal F (while the others wiped the rest of the lube off and regained their composure) for our flight to Norfolk. Airport map showed route to take to terminal, but after walking 3-400 metres, the hallway narrows and takes a left turn and suddenly exits back landside without any signage. Half of us thought this funny and didn't take the exit, walked right back to the security gates and found an obscure sign for a shuttle to Terminal F and just made our flight. The other half went through, missed the flight and had to be probed again!

Had 11 flights in the US in 12 days, and was probed all but one of them. My tongue was raw from me biting it all the time!

Yes, I sampled Kathmandu's domestic terminal as well. Truly revolting toilets and the waiting area very crowded. When we were released to take the bus out to the aircraft it was a blessing. As I was on my way to Lukla to go trekking, I'd been drinking alot to help acclimatize so when we then had to wait for about two hours before we took off, it got rather uncomfortable (no bogs on the Twotter). Several people got off and went for a leak in a ditch by the perimeter fence. There was a small crowd of dodgy blokes on the other side for whom the sight of westerners taking a piss was obviously daily entertainment. One girl confessed that it was a toss up between going in front of an audience or wetting herself. She chose the former. Many thanks to Kathmandu airport and Lumbini Airways "Your friend in sky!"

Barbados was the worst I have ever been to - it took 2 hours for the luggage to arrive despite my 36 hour delayed BWIA flight being 1 of only 2 aircraft arriving at the time. But then again it was raining and I am sure the baggage handlers did not want to get wet.

Definitely Mogadishu - when Somalia still existed as a country.

Sat in departure one night at 11pm having been searched to make sure that I wasn't taking any money (useless local or valuable foreign currency) with me.

We were then told to get out of the airport because the plane wasn't leaving till the morning.

Someone had nicked the runway lighting cables - so there I was, 15 k out of town, with absolutely no money!

Or arriving in Mog - in order to change forex into shillings, you had to have a currency declaration form - which had to be purchased with shillings, not forex. Doh!

But these days every time Mrs S and I find ourselves in a crap airport, we can console ourselves that it's better than Mogadishu! (Miami has run close at times though)

Re: Worst airport you have ever been through (as PAX)

Funnily enough I was discussing this last night with a friend who has spent several hours on different occassions getting into the States last year. I was going on about my many trips East during the cold war and I have to say that no one in Berlin, Bucharest, Sophia, Kirov or any of the places I landed in the Soviet bloc treated me as badly as he said that he had been by US immigration. I suppose that the toilets were often pretty parlous and security took a great interest. I lost the odd magazine but I reckon they wanted summat to read. I started carrying copies of Flight, Playboy and Mayfair specially for them. I was interviewed by Securitate in Bucharest very intensively once or twice but I was still through immigration within an hour or so. My mate has just spent four and a half hours as a guest of Newark. He wasn't impressed.

The worst "entering US" experience that I have ever had was about 15 minutes at IAH when I arrived to attend a wedding. I had to explain why my whole family hadn't come over for the 'family friend' wedding, and open the gift wrapped teapot that was the present and where the wedding was and where I was staying etc. I felt hard done by for that one one, but 4.5 hrs ? What ever did he do to attract that much 'personal service'?

I'm not sure - unless they know that he is a friend of mine.

CDG without a shadow of a doubt - and on multiple occasions. First encounter was on a fligth in from the U.S. Had been booked on SABENA but the aircraft went tech so got rerouted via CDG with Air France. My connecting flight went from terminal 2D. No worries, thinks I, just follow the signs. Oh no! No way! I reached a corridor which pointed to 2D in 1 direction at 1 end and in the other direction at the other. My next experience I tried to use the toilet facilities in 2C. They were overflowing and the stench of urine made me gag. Then there was the queue after coming inbound on Cathay from HKG. We arrived with about 5 other flights, 2 immigration desks open. 2 hours to get through immigration.

It's complicated, badly signed, dirty and the immigration queues are awful. Apart from that, it's alright.

There's nothing much wrong with Preveza, just a bit small that's all. You can usually get under the temporary awning before sunstroke hits you in the queue to check in Once you've done that, wander back down the road to the bar to watch the planes arrive, when you see your's land there is just time for another beer
Bangalore is not too bad either. Beats the old charter terminal at Athens. That was grim. B***** all to eat or drink, coppers kicking anyone lying or sitting on the floor, assuming there was enough space. Then the pleasure of being herded through security into the departures "lounge" with fewer comforts and more pax.
Possibly my biggest hate is Gatwick North Terminal. Seen it too many times. A particular pleasure is Immigration where the number of staff is inversely proportional to the number of flights arriving; which is presumably why they had to put up those notices warning of the consequences of punching the surly civil servant behind the desk.

Oh please don't tell me that, I'm flying there and catching a connection on my own in a couple of months, a first for me. I'm scared now... security does not sound fun

Complaints about the INS at US airports could fill a multi page thread on their own, without bringing in any other aspect of the airport.

Glad to see Miami deservedly getting dishonorable mention time after time. Arrived at six AM to find THREE large planeloads of passengers all using one baggage carosel and no announcements whatever in English.

At Madrid, wait in line well over an hour for passport control. Slowest moving passport line I've ever seen.

And concourse G at Dulles looks and feels like reincarnation of Ellis Island. .
