Re: What It Means To Be British?

If all the "People from Other places" like to think we are a bunch of oddities, I suppose by affliction and association we are, Odd that is.

But, Who do they all turn to pleading for help when the sh*te hits the fan, well its not Germany, its deffo not France or Italy or Spain or Portugal or Denmarks or Sweden or Greece or Holland or Belgium or indeed any other state in the World Order. yes you may have guessed:-

Its US " THE BRITISH" and secondly our other friends THE YANKS.

Without the Brits the World would be a dreadful place, laugh if you wish , be sarcastic if you are bright enough, but above all else we The British will always be ready to help!

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Come on now, be honest, wouldn't you all cringe if someone started a thread entitled "what it means to be American"?
We have come to expect this type of naive, self congratulation from Americans, but from Brits? Please, lets see some of that Limey apathy and cynicism that we all know and love. Anything else just isn't cricket.

Well, as I posted earlier, it doesn't really mean anything. Strong tea and room-temperature beer perhaps.

Re: What It Means To Be British?

What it means to be British is to live in one of the most beautiful, if damp, places on Earth, with one of the world's leading economies. Culture and art leads the civilised world, and we have probably the least corrupt civil service and legal systems on the planet. The most honest politicians, too.

What it means to be British is to have all that and spend your whole life moaning about it and saying that the country is f*cked and that you want to get out.

Well over half of emigrants are back in a few years.

...are back in a few years.
Twenty five so far and still counting...

Can someone let Maggie know that I still have my bike and can pedal it if she wants me back? (I'm still pretty handy with an Avometer and screwdriver) If the old hag is still in number 10 that is. Or have you got a new Prime Minister these days?

one of the world's leading economies.
Based upon manufacturing nothing,

Culture and art leads the civilised world,
We make the most expensive sheds (ex boats) in the world.

and we have probably the least corrupt civil service
Who have irrelevant, guaranteed jobs regardless of performance and who's pensions are taken much earlier and are far superior to their counterparts in the private sector

and legal systems on the planet.
That'll be planet Zarg, then. Judgements are a source of ridicule. Luvviness gone mad!

The most honest politicians, too.
I'll reply to that when I'm calm enough.

There ya go........that reply is what it means to be British.

And I thought it was just wearing Union Jack underpants.
Talking of the Union Flag, have we any Ulster British here? Wonder what they think defines them as British rather than Irish?

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Acbus, I think that your reply proves my point precisely.

Tell me of a country that has a less corrupt Civil Service, political establishment and legal system than us?

France? Italy? Japan? The USA? Germany? Russia? Zimbabwe?

Flip assertions prove nothing.

( in the satisfaction stakes)
Ah yes Hamster, but what if they had asked us the same question the following morning, when we had sobered up?
As regards the Ulster Irish thing, my acquaintances there consist of a small number of flagwaving gits, who tell everyone they are Irish, another small number of flagwaving gits who tell everyone they are British, and a large bunch of very decent people who wish that everyone with a flag would go and **** off and leave them alone.

Irish people's 2 main topics of conversation:
1) Rip-off Ireland
2) That program about rip-off Ireland.

Well, the UK is just out of the Top 10 of the The 2005 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (even Australia does it better....)

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Poms....funny little people, with no fear, or sense of self importance. They can laugh at themselves, even when doing serious jobs like running an Empire.

Crap weather, horrible beer, gorgeous women, good blokes, infuriatingly unreliable cars, brilliant if quirky engineering, inventive lateral thinkers, knobbly knees, indefatigable fighters, true friends to cats, dogs, and horses (as well as ferrets and pigeons ), builders of a better civilisation.

And they can just as happily pull the p1ss out of a compliment as an insult

I reckon that sums them up. They'll do me. Awaiting incoming

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Gotta agree, Mr Wolf. Only thing I'd argue would be the beer. Yer natural Pomgolian brew isn't a bad drop, it's the imported [email protected] like lagers and such that give it a bad name.

...Oh, and PC whingeing. Fortunately not widespread.

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Apologising to anyone who bumps into you whilst hiking naked in atrocious weather drinking from a flask of cold tea, having missed the monthly bus to wherever it is you want to go

On arrival at your overpriced fleapit you have a crap meal, surly service but at least you get to share your bed with he last encumbents head lice

The following day you hire a British car ( if there is such a beast) and it breaks down. Luckily enough due to the traffic congestion you can walk faster whilst looking at those anecdotal pearls of wisdom road signs we have on our motorways that stating the bleedin obvious " dont drink and drive..dont use a phone whilst driving...save water put a brick in your bath"

You look continue the journey. Do you pay the equivalent of your mortgage to undertake a 200 mile journey on the train or fly for a quid. You fly for a quid.Flight time 30 mins pi$$ing about time 6 hours.

You get home and find the sink is leaking and you forgot to tax your car that has been locked in the garage. You phone the DVLA who have levied an automatic fine even though your car has been locked up in the garage . You waste half a months salary listening to Frank Sinatra and other assorted tunes ...you eventually give up.

You call the plumber who turns out to be Lithuanian and whose only qualities are how to milk a goat and strip a Kaleshnikov. You go else where and get another plumber who hisses through his teeth like a pressure cooker and exclaims the u bend on your sink will cost 500 to fit as its a special one...

You sit down to watch the news and only find reality TV shows in which a bunch of Chavs get fatter/thinner/richer/fight their neighbours/ are in competition with their neighbours/having the house and garden made over/having their pets/kids psycho analysed. The news comes on and we find our esteemed Deputy Primeminister has been involved in a street brawl.

The weather comes on and we are not told to travel tomorrow as a snow flake is expected in Esher

Still not to worry lets all 'ave a nice cup of tea eh...
