Maldives gig is or was the property of Ken Borek Air

Not sure though. I am not a man who is hugely wise in the ways of such things. Borek looks interesting though. I remember reading a thread written by a former Malives Pilot. He did say (as always) the best thing is to turn up with a float rating and some twin time. I also remember reading that the Maldivian authorities will validate most licences. All conjecture. Do a search.

Good morning everybody.

I m looking for a job but no calls until now meybe because i ve only the ATPL Frozen with 250 hrs? ahahaah :}:}:}
anyway I decide to sent some cv to the aerotaxi fly in the maldive island but i can't find the address. somebody know some links for maldive, caribbean island or some good link form small european air cargo like magic blue bird, because when u write air cargo in google they always appear Emirates,Cathay P. DHL TNT but not the small company.

I was sent a flight crew minimums sheet and was surprised to see just how high they were.



they wanted a lot of float time, and probably more twotter float time than most here have total if i remember correctly !

I don’t get this, why is there an apparent a perception among non-seaplane pilots that the Maldives gig is job for low time, inexperienced jockeys?

Use Google. It will quickly throw up two operators…But with 250 hours what do you think you have to offer to an operators in the Maldives over the worlds numerous high time seaplane pilots?

Again, I don’t get this… given they operate twin otters on floats why it is surprising that they want a lot of twin otter float time? Sounds perfectly logical to me, I mean what else would they want?

Seaplane flying a specialized facet of aviation, it is not something the Maldivian pilots are just tinkering around with for a year or so.
The worlds insurance companies won’t cover you to operate a twin turbine seaplane in rough water and ocean swells, even in the right hand seat, unless you have considerable prior seaplane experience, or pay a huge premium. Why would a company wish to pay that premium for you when they can hire an experienced pilot? (One reason would be if you are Maldivian)
If most of your flying has been off big flat solid runways, whose surface is not constantly changing, then quite naturally the Maldivian operators will toss your application in the bin, possibly after much laugter.
If you want to get a job in the Maldives, get a seaplane rating and start applying to single engine, piston seaplane operators. Build up some hours, then more onto a turbine seaplane. When you have a couple of thousand hours and a similar number of water landings, then send your resume to the Maldives. You will find that that is what almost all of the pilots there have done.

I hope my previous post was not too harsh? It’s just that every time the Maldives are mentioned on pprue there seems to be people popping up who wouldn’t know the difference between step-taxing and plowing, yet who somehow appear to think the Maldives operators would be clamoring to give them a seat. I don’t get why someone with a fresh CPL would not realize that operating a twin-otter on the open-ocean should not be their first piloting job. Still I guess for any pilot in grey Europe there has to much appeal to flying a seaplane in the tropics!

I have never been to your country so I have no idea what is available to you there. I realize someone with a fresh CPL has to have starry-eyes and check out even the most remote possibility of employment, but a little research as to the work, requirments, and environment you are applying to goes a long way. Aqua Airlines in Italy would be able to advise you better than I about seaplanes in you region – give them a call. Maybe try and get some dock/office work with them as a way of getting in the door for some flying.

Well said Mr Springer. Many threads have run around here about the Maldives, do a search. Actually, do an ADVANCED search and make sure you change the period to a year.

I left MAT not all that long ago, and I can tell you, as did Jerry, that it is a very tough place to get into these days. For MAT, the bare minimums are multi IFR CPL with float rating for the F.O. positions. However there are enough young canadian guys applying to Borek with Twin Otter PPCs that its pretty tough to get in without it. And more and more Maldivians are coming back from America with licences, and of course being local they will get preference for local jobs.

There is also TMA, locally owned and operated, and sometimes they seem to be of more luck than MAT. Remember all of MAT's pilots are actually employed and paid by Borek.

MAT is definitely NOT a short term gig, I've seen the resumes from Captain Lufthansa looking for a 6 month break. Forget it. Minimums for captains at MAT/Borek : 1000 hrs floats, 500 hrs DHC6 on floats, 2500 hours total, Full ATPL. And these are all with good reason, many many challenging ever changing conditions at many different lagoons with many things to hit!! I'm not the first or last guy to hole a float or two... :mad:

You're better bet would be to try Winnair, Seaborne (sp?) Logan, Air Sea Lines (Greece), hmmm short list in Europe... If you do apply, please please get the spelling and gramatics rite!! If english isn't your first language then get someone to proof read it for you. Keep that resume to 1 page. The fact that you volunteered at the coffee stand at the airport on the weekend really won't help your chances... And do your research.... If you spell it "Ken Borek Air" than thats probably as far as your reader will get before it goes in the bin...

Flying floats, especially Caps on twin otters, is fantastic fun and challenging. Flying barefoot in shorts and t-shirt ain't half bad either. Maldives lifestyle... well not quite as good as it used to be. Anyhow, anybody still has ??'s about MAT / Maldives I can do my best. Now that I have a "real" job, its time for me to go iron my own shirt ... and damit would someone please explain how you tie a tie properly???
