Ryanair New 'Free' Typerating

On today's Pilot Expo Berlin, Ryanair speaker Angelo metioned about free type rating if you finish Ab-initio and prase 1 training starting from summer 2024.
Guessing the price will gonna go up with the partner trainer as talked to a guy in AFTA.
Not sure will this are really happening but i assume both trainer will need to provide extra course regarding the TR.
Maybe not right time to go in now as you might end up still need to pay 30K euros for that and wait till summer.
But without any fincial support that would still really hard for guys like me wanting to become a pilot one day.

So it's not really free if the Ab-initio price is going up... by aproximately 30k :}

Did the guy from AFTA actually tell you the price was going up?
I don’t think AFTA need to provide TR. TR is currently provided by Airline Flight Academy. I can’t see that changing. Also why would they make such a big deal about this news if essentially the program remained the same?

Seems to be that the TR becomes 'free' to the cadet but the ATO is required to pay £20K to Ryanair to cover the 'free' bit at the time the cadet is enrolled, and therefore you can expect course fees for Ryanair 'approved' courses to rise by at least that. Not sure what happens to the missing £10K but Ryanair / Easyjet / etc have always bobbed the price of the TR up and down depending on what they think they can squeeze out of the market. Also note the ATO is being asked to pay Ryanair years in advance of any actual TR. Several not-very-happy 'approved' ATOs out there who think they are being done over.

are you suggesting that the price of the course will go up 20-30k AND the cadets will be bonded to Ryanair for type rating? (Essentially paying back the price of it through salary sacrifice) that makes absolutely no sense to me.

FixedWing721 25th Feb 2024 16:12

They will still be getting the TR money from somewhere - modular cadets outside the ab initio stuff still have to pay £30k upfront "for the foreseeable" as per the presentation so not much seems to have changed really.

DavidKando 25th Feb 2024 16:54

From my understanding is that it has nothing really to do with the ATO, but rather the cadet itself.. the presentation stated that there is no "up front" cost of the TR. Well what does that mean?

I'd say there's 2 options:
  • You either sign a bond with them and repay that 30k back over the years of your bond
  • Or something beyond the lines of what Alex said above..
With the current market, being bonded to Ryanair would actually be ideal (in my opinion, this is a very subjective topic) as they have the fastest route to command. So if you're bonded for 4-5 years you can probably expect to become a Captain.. all being that you've met the criteria.

As I said it really depends on what the cadet would like to pursue within their flying career!

I could be extremely wrong but that is what I took from the PowerPoint/presentation

What he said was that there will be a bond for the TR part.

And the Type Rating will be at AFA still.

Yes indeed, all Ryanair DAC''s type ratings take place in AFA if I'm not mistaken

I see VA Airline Training in the UK no longer offer the Ryanair Mentored APS MCC.

Anyone know if there’s going to be another UK provider?

WindyTurtle 28th Feb 2024 11:17

New partnered schools will be released soon. For reference, this new bonding for ab-initio/gateway 1 is from summer 2024 so it shouldn't be long to find out the new schools.
