Paying for my own LT?

Howdy y'all.

Is the title says, Have I dropped so low that I think that buying myself my own line-training?

I'm stuck with an MPL with a b737 TR, I've literally 1H on type.

I start feeling sick by just waiting and hoping that some airline will call me for an assessment and rather to just sit here and wait I'd like to do something about it, I'm aware that I might still be a little impatient and that the industry is still recovering here in Europe, as you guys might understand that as a fresh cadet all I wish for right now is to get my feet of the ground and start flying.

After a quick google search I found some crap for ~40k€ for "200h minimum" on type. I cant understand that I'm even thinking about it. I've more or less applied for every open position in Europe & outside, And I'm aware that the industry is on a upraise and according Eurocontrol we're back at precovid at the start of 2023.
But in the same time I want to be as attractive as possible once more and more companies start looking for low-timers and I suppose having a few 100 hours on type wont ever hurt.
(ryan and wizz with the buy tr get lt thing going wont consider my application due to MPL)

I'm aware that I'm selling out everyone else by agreeing on such crap as the thing mentioned above and lets not mention the loans I've to take to finance it.

Guys do you have any idea how I should keep myself as attractive as possible for a future employment without paying for LT?

Cheers for reading my rant,
Flemrik

If you have decided you are going to pay for LT, absolutely do not pay for anything that doesn't guarantee you a minimum of 500hrs. 200hrs on type is as useless as 1, no airline will be interested and you'll just be left with a big hole in your bank account. You're better off paying 30k at ryanair and redoing the rating than that.

Are you in the EU? Have you considered other jobs on different types? What happened to the airline associated with the MPL?

iggy 20th Jun 2022 00:44

Sorry if my question is an obvious one but, wasn't the MPL a license that allowed you to fly only for the airline that trained you in the first place?

If that is the case, then you should be using your buck to get a CPL or a f-ATPL.

Flemrik 20th Jun 2022 03:59

As previously mentioned, I am not able to head over to ryan since they don't take people with MPL.

Indeed I'm in EU, I've been applying for everything more or less, ATR,320,195 you name it. I'm not mentioning any names but the airline I was suppose to go is the flag carrier that has recovered the worst during the pandemic, as well as that they still havnt taken back any of their pilots from pre-covid in the main company.

Flemrik 20th Jun 2022 04:04

I've been thinking about it but the issue is that I wont be able to got a CPL, but rather a MPL with CPL privileges. And im not sure if the airlines will have the same attitude towards it as if there were no CPL privileges, since after all, it's still a MPL.

It used to be like what youre referring to that MPL students were only allowed to fly with their "host airline" but it was changed a while back.

Agree with iggy , upgrade to CPL…

Have a look at US/FAA situation: possible upgrade to FAA CPL on a student visa, which allows (limited) work experience after. Then convert CPL to CPL.

Certainly cheaper than £40k, and you might have fun.

Good luck.

What’s the cost for you to convert to a more useable frozen ATPL?

MPL with x hours is pretty pointless, far more useful to have an fATPL with no hours.

At least you’ve done a rating, will make it easier when you go to Ryanair to buy their ratings, realistically that’s you most likely way into this game.

So no, I wouldn’t buy the hours. But not from some righteous point of view, anyone on here who paid for even a minute of SEP flight training has paid to fly, it’s just in a different setting despite what they’ll complain about. It’s a no because it just won’t help you (sorry)

:D:D

You are spot on. Far too many self righteous people sprouting about, many having paid in excess of £130,000 to get into the right seat. They then have the audacity to complain about someone paying for line training (and you'll find they themselves also paid for it but it was itemised as something else in their vastly inflated course price). I have seen many cases of people paying for the entire ATPL course and line training and still managing to spend less than others on these airline programmes via the big schools. This isn't to say I agree with paying for LT, but it's the hypocrisy of some.

As for the OP, apologies I forgot about the constraints of the MPL license. You had mentioned about paying for LT at I presume a carrier not affiliated with your initial MPL course so I thought why not just try elsewhere. Your #1 priority here is to get a CPL/IR. You'll then be able to apply for Ryanair and Wizz, the most likely to take you in the current climate.

In all honesty does it look likely the airline will re pick you up at some point. When did you finish training?
I think unless you have money to throw at this then being patient and getting a non flying job in the meantime is probably the best course of action.

sorry to be negative but I know people with 1000 hrs on type and they are still jobless after the pandamic ..........In my case took me 4 years to get to the right seat ......

Since CEOs discovered that pilots will pay for their own training, I think most of us these days have paid for - or at least towards - our training in some way. Are there any places that pay for all their pilots' training, except the military?

Years ago I paid £3,000 for a Shorts 360 rating, a type in use by several UK airlines way back then, and that eventually got me my first job; flying the night mail. The thing is, flying a jet does need experience beyond knowing which buttons or levers to push - you ideally need experience in aviation operations before flying a jet; to help you stay ahead of the aircraft.
When one has been a safety pilot for new jet F/Os and seeing that "rabbit in the headlights" look on their faces during a normal, straightforward line flight - some were maxed-out, even before the push-back. It reminded me of my first days on line with the big boys !
Starting on a small turbo-prop gives you that grounding. Even military fast jet pilots start on small turbo-prop trainers.

But I would say paying for line training is probably going too far - on top of your MPL and type rating. I know you are desperate to get that first job, we all were, but there has to be a point where you stop spending money, otherwise you will put yourself on a treadmill - possibly working for terrible Ts & Cs that you have to stay on for most of your working life just to pay off your training.

I would keep writing to airlines; every airline you can think off. Chose your top 5 and keep writing to their chief pilots - every few months. Ask if you can visit their airline, see if anybody you know has any connection with any airline.

In the meantime, do what you can aviation-wise - but also work on an alternative job, just in case the flying never happens or doesn't happen for a few years. Being a pilot takes money, but also luck, in roughly equal quantities.

Good luck :ok:

FTEJerez allow you to convert MPL to ATPL, contact them.

A320LGW 25th Jun 2022 13:54

How many of you started training together and what are the others in your cadet group doing? If a group of you approached a school to convert you may be able to negotiate a discount in some places

Bloated Stomach 26th Jun 2022 08:47

A question you need to ask yourself is where do you draw the line? You’ve paid for your training, type rating, line training. What’s next? Another LPC because you couldn’t find a job with 200 hours on type? another type rating because one wasn’t enough?

I feel for your situation up until type rating and 1 hour of base training but buying line training doesn’t resolve anything.
