Is TR usually paid up front or over time? Do people budget this before training?
 
Do airlines usually ask for the Type Rating to be paid up front or over a period of time.

What if you can't afford it?

Has anyone been offered a job but couldn't take it because they couldn't afford the TR after everything they spent on training?

This thread could be moved to the training and studies thread. Who budgets and plans for the Type rating before commencing studies?

Similar questions have been asked previously but it was on a 2004 thread so it may need revamping or merging

A bond is more usual again at the moment, the airline agrees to provide the TR and you agree to remain for a specified period of time, if you don't leave then no cash changes hands.

If you are offered job where you are asked to pay for the TR my suggestion would be to walk away from it, however you may be able to negotiate to pay from salary once on line.

Do you know which airlines ask for it up front and which do it through a bond.

I am trying to figure out my training route and how/if I would need to pay for a type rating?

I wouldn't worry that far ahead. Concentrate on getting a fATPL.

Oh, I thought it was better to plan to budget for a TR just in case I got a job offer which required buying one, then couldnt afford it and didnt get another job offer anytime soon after.

Whereas if I save more money for a TR then I have more chance to get a job after fATPL as I wont have to reject a job offer due to not being able to afford it?

If you're saving for it, then you will wait longer to afford a fATPL with a TR as well. Which unknown type are you saving for? They cost vastly different amounts, so when do you stop saving and start training?
While you're still saving, someone else could get a fATPL and get a job with a free TR. They might not - they might start saving again for a TR and still be ready at the same time you are.
Timing is everything, you need to get trained as soon as possible, and be ready for the next wave there's no point paddling after the wave has passed.

You are being offered some sound practical advice. You seem to look for complications. Why is that? Just get on with it if you have the necessary passion. Otherwise stay with your day job.
Being in the right place at the right time plays a part of getting that all important first job.
The sooner licence issue occurs the better.
