Grading 747/777 Modern Cockpit

Hi guys,

My apologies for sounding stupid but I finally have my first job assessment and I'm expected to do a grading on a 747 or 777. (For a 737 job but I guess they decide). Anyway I'm expected to do interceptions and holdings and although I know the basics I have only performed these things in older flightdecks with RMI and CDIs.

Now I am wondering how we can perform these kind of interceptions raw data in a 747 for example. I assume there is a way to tune the VOR but I honestly have no clue. Also is there an instructor who knows how they will ask these questions and how "raw" your raw data has to be.

I'm sorry for any spelling mistakes. Non English and on a phone.

thanks

Hi Dreamer666,

I don’t know about the 777 but on the 747-400 you can display a raw compass rose with VOR/ADF needles.

Select ‘VOR’ on the ND mode selector (on the outboard glare-shield) and then press to get the CTR (centre) display. That way you will see a full compass rose.

Next, use the FMC CDU mode keys (on the forward control stand) to display the radio tuning page and tune the desired VORs and NDBs. You can also select the desired VOR course on this page.

Then use the little silver switches on the EFIS control panel to display left and/or right VOR or ADF arrows as desired on the ND compass rose.

The VOR needles are green and the ADF needles are blue. ‘Left’ needles are single and ‘right’ needles are double.

Any needle which is not being used can be switched off, to avoid clutter and confusion.

The VOR course (if selected on the FMC CDU) will appear as a standard beam-bar, together with a to/from pointer.

Tuned Frequencies, Idents and DME information will also be displayed.

What is your location and where is the assessment? I may be able to help more. I am an ex-instructor/examiner on the 747-400.

I had a sim assessment on a 747, which being a airbus driver was a scary thought. People suggested I paid hundreds of pounds to hire a sim for an hour. I couldn’t part with the cash so I spent 30 quid on Microsoft flight simulator, a realisitic 747 addon and a second hand yoke, ruder pedal and throttle quadrant set up. I mucked around with that for 10 hours and figured it all out. Thoroughly recommend that approach. Even managed to sell it all
On for a small profit.

FWIW the T7 is the same (ND, CDU useage etc).

Hi!

Thank you so much for your extensive answer. It seems that it'll be easier then on a small aircraft although I'm not sure if they have standby instruments in the SIM. For me it's the breaking point as I'm quite bad at interceptions and especially non standard holding entries.

I know it's things they teach in flight school but not flying for 2 years makes you forget those things quite quickly!

Unfortunately I cannot PM you but can anyone explain to me how they will ask the questions.
assuming it'll be a VOR asking to intercept a radial I have to found out of they want inbound or outbound correct? As I guess 090 inbound is heading 270 and vice versa.

if they ask for a bearing it's always my bearing towards a beacon or not?

again sorry for being a moron....

Ok, thanks Wiggy!

I also have my grading on the 747. I currently fly the 777 and I was wondering if anyone here flew both types and know any difference between the handling? Everything is gonna be raw data.
