BShute,

Congratulations mate!Do you mind sharing where did you train? Can't comment on the assessment but I remember reading over here somewhere on the forum, that in the tech questions, they put a lot on emphasis on weather, considering you'll be flying the Dash-8. Just do a little search :ok:

FlyBe Q400 type rating

Hello all!

Just a quick question to throw out there - FlyBe are still recruiting FOs onto their Q400 fleet, is the type rating for new Q400 Dash 8 pilots still bonded for 3 years as they were back in 2011?

Yes it is. A 36 monthly decreasing bond.

Q400 bond is £13.5K over 36 months. After 18 months you owe £6.75K and after 36 months you are bond free.

Hello again, and happy new year to you all.

I have an interview at FlyBe next week, does anyone have any experience of the FlyBe interview and recruitment process?

I'd be grateful for any pointers as to what to expect.

Veren 2nd Jan 2015 12:31

Congrats!

If you don't mind, could you tell us your experience level and how long ago you applied?

Still hope to get a call from them myself :) Or a PFO, sitting around waiting for anything to come through sucks!

tombarnes 3rd Jan 2015 14:39

Thanks :) Getting nervous now, been swotting somewhat on ground school and FlyBe specific news, facts and history.

I graduated from CAE Oxford Aviation Academy about 4 weeks ago, and applied to FlyBe just after that. So I'm a very fresh, low hours FO with fATPL including JOC MCC.

29 years old, a little flying experience prior to starting (20 hors C152 & gliding experience). Previously worked in public sector for 8 years.

Veren 3rd Jan 2015 17:05

Well, I would love to hear how you get on! Perhaps you could share your experience afterwards?

Interesting you heard from them so quickly! I have mates that applied 4 or 5 months ago and are still waiting/hoping. I applied early December so I can't complain (yet) I guess!

Best of luck mate

There's nothing to catch you out. It's a good old fashioned HR type interview with the view of you passing. You have to convince them you are not right for the job for you not to get it. Be yourself, be honest and know your Flybe stuff. If you get asked what you know about Flybe and you answer with, "you have a base in Manchester" then you will not get the job. There's a few tech questions to answer but anyone with any ounce of ATPL knowledge shouldn't have issues. You are not going to get asked what the LLS is at 10,000ft with an OAT of -3°

Good luck

cgwhitemonk11 5th Jan 2015 16:14

What Reverse said is essentially all that anyone should have to say about the process, good post

Reversethrustset 5th Jan 2015 16:47

Thanks cgwhitemonk11, and of course I meant you're not going to get asked about the LSS (Local Speed of Sound) and not LLS. That was large fingers typing on smartphone trouble. Good luck all.

tombarnes 6th Jan 2015 18:41

Thanks for all best wishes and info folks!

I will keep you all posted in due course.

gefferzz 12th Jan 2015 15:27

Hello all,

Can anybody tell me how long it took to get a reply after applying, and if it was by phone or e-mail?

Thanks in advance.

Flybe's late shift start and end time.

On Flybe's roster, around what time during the day does the late shift start and end? Or does it vary by base?

Snr 24th Jan 2015 15:06

It varies by base. At EDI the latest we start is ~15:00, and finish is 23:20 for the London City routes. Earlies are usually about 6am start. Like I say, varies by base though.

RWY_31R 25th Jan 2015 16:07

And how does standby work? E.g length of call out period? airport or at home? frequency of standby blocks in a roster period etc.

Roster

Continuing on the roster theme, a quick Q if I may:

What is a typical two-week like roster for a new FO?

After line training is completed that is.

Thank you.

cgwhitemonk11 26th Jan 2015 08:50

These questions are impossible to answer unless you know which base you are going to. If your in BHX, expect tons of night stopping at the moment, if your lucky enough to be in BHD expect to finish by 2200 every night and virtually no night stopping until LCY trained. Typically 5/2 off or 5/3 off at the moment once you are on line, again depending where you are

G1991 27th Jan 2015 11:44

Dependent on base it can be a 5am check in to a 11:30pm check out.

Duties are wide and varied and as said before the amount of night stopping varies massively per base. From BHD with very little to MAN with very much. I think I'm right in saying that every base (not sure on new ABZ base) will have night stops this summer of varying levels. But there are systems in place to bid for more or less.

Anywhere from 1-6 sector days (again base dependent) but the variety of flying is great. AMS WAT is/was a duty from BHX - vectors to a 4 mile final on to a ridiculously long runway to within a couple of hours flying an NDB arc onto what can only be described as a 737 parking stand of a runway!

Flight deck can normally be rostered up to six days on with a minimum of three off afterwards. Protection around leave days and a few other benefits too. Full time is currently random roster but applications can be made for fixed days off I believe.

Plus the Dash makes even the most repetitive of days interesting...

Roster

Thank you everyone!

That is an interesting insight.

Makes me even more determined to fly a Q400 for Flybe.

Deano777 27th Jan 2015 17:52

Just to correct a couple of anomalies by G1991.

You cannot, and never have been able to bid for more or less night stops. You can request to be placed on minimum, normal or maximum night stops, but your preference is just that, a preference. This means nothing in the grand scheme of things. We've had pilots on maximum doing minimum and pilots on minimum doing maximum, all in the same base. I was on minimum night stops and still being rostered between between 10 & 15 nights away per month.

The second anomaly is that you will not be rostered a minimum of 3 days off after working 6, it is a maximum of 3 days off. If you get more than 3 then consider yourself very fortunate and in the minority.
