I noticed that CTC have opened up applications. The big things that stick out to me are:

1. No mention of the expected easyJet guaranteeing the loan. It still states "Security Required: Mortgage over a property in the UK"

2. Like Oxford, no final stage at easyJet HQ. This is a concern as if easyJet have delegated the selection, then do you have to undergo additional selection down the road? Do you have a contract with easyJet from the start like BA?

From my point of view the main difference with Oxford / CTC is that you do the basic phase of the MPL in a A320 simulator (vs a CRJ? at Oxford). I guess you could say thats good and bad. Would be nice to have some experience of something other than a sidestick to base your career on? On the other hand the more time in the A320 the better.. What are peoples view on that?

Also I read that 3200 applied last year, thats only a few hundred less than applied to the FPP. Shows how far easy have come in the last few years..

Hi everyone,

is this recruitment just for JAA or also for international applicants?

chris_ 6th May 2014 20:13

An update to my earlier post.
I've been invited to Stage 2 at OAA.
Needing to choose a date to attend, will need to practice some of the tests beforehand mind.

I can confirm the bond you give ctc is paid back tax free and your salary is dropped by the same amount. So a second officer scale is £38k, if you went through ctc your salary will be £29k. That goes through the taxman then the bond is added on after.
It's a substantial tax saving when you move to the SFO scale. My bond repayment is based on the £60k bond and am about 350 a month better off as a result. Over 7 years thats £29,400 more in your pocket than the government.

LastPastthePost 7th May 2014 10:36

I just did the Maths on the Finance, with some assumptions about time to command (ie 9 years at easyJet and 18 years at BA). These are based on Oxford's PARC Finances and exclude any tax implication of bond repayments, bonuses and differences in Interest Rates etc.

To summarise:
* There isn't much difference between BA and easyJet in the first 8 years.
* The big difference hits when you get your command at easyJet.
* In the 10 years where you are a Captain at easyJet vs SFO at BA, you accumulate 420k more in pay.
* After 30 years (which is when I would want to retire) the deficit is reduced to 200k.

For me, 1st Class Travel and Long Haul isn't such a big issue. I like my own bed and my own time zone. Likewise seniority is a big negative for me, I'd rather have weekends off when hopefully the kids are growing up than when I'm nearing retirement. Also I think the below highlights that your taking a 400k bet that BA is still around, needs Captains and the pay delta still exists in 10 years time. My preference is that I would rather have the cash in my pocket. The contract is a negative point, but one that I'm comfortable with. The regional point is a positive for me, not just within the UK but across Europe.

I also get your point about wanting to fly for BA. I agree that our generation has been brought up in an environment that people aspire to fly British Airways. Who knows if that will be the case in years to come?

So I think the easyJet MPL and the Future Pilot Program are both great initiatives. Your choice on which one is your preference does probably boil down to your Career aspirations of Long Haul vs Short Haul.

YEAR BA easyJet Deficit

30 159,145 125,696 -200,578

Notes:
Payscales are based on pilotjobsnetworks and Future Pilot Program Presentation.
BA Drops at year 8 after the bond is repaid
For easyJet I assume 600 sectors per year (ie 150 working days, 4 sectors per day)
I include the current loyalty bonuses for easyJet ie 5, 10, 15 salary.
For BA, I assume a linear progression from paypoint 1 to paypoint 34.

Interesting figures LpTP :)

However, I think nine years to command is unsustainable in the long run. Mathematically speaking such times to command are only likely after i) rapid expansion of the fleet, or ii) a mass exodus of flight crew to other carriers.

Realistically I wouldn't bank on making command before the 12 or 13 year mark at EZY; and that's possibly still being quite optimistic. So in reality, I'd be surprised if there was much of a difference in earnings over the course of your career, irrespective of whether you fly for BA or EZY.

Nevertheless, both are great options in my opinion, and anyone should jump at the opportunity to get a position flying for either.

I was wondering if anyone could shed any light as to definitively whether Oxford's course offers a 'guaranteed' UK base? Their website doesn't have any mention of this, however CTC's does offer a UK base - I would have thought the same terms would apply at both?

Thanks!

vne10 8th May 2014 17:05

Thanks Ben, that's a shame that they don't offer a UK base. I'd happily work from anywhere if it was just me, but with a young family at school-age it isn't really feasible to live in another European country.

Ironside757 8th May 2014 20:52

At the bottom of the OAA easyjet application form it says that you could be based in the UK, Germany or Portugal. I know some MPL graduates who have recently been based in Lisbon.

Danny212 11th May 2014 22:04

Has anyone heard back from OAA yet? I presume it'll be after 15th (last Stage2 testing date).

chris_ 12th May 2014 14:34

Do you mean after attending Stage 2? (i.e. results) or just in general for a Stage 2 invite?

I've been invited for Stage 2 testing, but don't think I'm going to bother now.
Going to hang on until FPP re-opens and go all gung-ho towards that.
:ok:

Danny212 12th May 2014 17:23

Nope I meant Stage 3. Should've been more clear lol

Stage5 13th May 2014 11:52

Nice table of figures, but don't forget about income tax. Around £40000 will go on tax and NI when jumping to the circa £120000 bracket. Just over £20000 is lost on a circa £75000 pay band. But that said if pension contributions were say 10% it works out at about £1800 per month difference in take home. I doubt FREA allowance will go up anytime soon after the recent (?) rise.

How will tax/NI/pension contributions change? I love a good guessing game. :}

LastPastthePost 14th May 2014 10:39

There are some final stage interview / group exercises next week at Oxford.. No doubt the first of many..

Does anyone know the process and timescales for transferring back to the UK if you get allocated to a continental base? (or UK base you don't like). I wouldn't mind spending a few months abroad, but if it takes years it might be a problem..

cky88 14th May 2014 12:12

are any of you guys going to the stage 3 interviews next week? also do you know how many places are available this year?

ashpure 14th May 2014 15:46

Its somewhat strange that OAA have decided to push back the deadline from the 12th May until the 26th May especially since this week was meant to be the last stage 2 assessments with stage 3 commencing next week. I'm not sure how this will affect the schedule for the stage 3 assessments!

:(

LastPastthePost 14th May 2014 17:03

I think with some Airlines, they have a standard, you meet it, your in. As long as it works out to roughly the same number they intended its fine (although sometimes (like the FPP) not enough meet the standard!)

I know last year with easyJet MPL they told some people mid process they made the cut, so they could get moving with the earlier courses. Same thing happened at Aer Lingus.

Did they ask easyJet specific questions at stage 2 interviews? I got a credit for a previous interview so didn't need to do one.

cky88 14th May 2014 19:10

I have my stage 3 assessment next week, let's hope it all goes to plan

Danny212 14th May 2014 22:04

Likewise :) Stage 3 next week ..recieved a phone call as emails weren't sending through to some people including myself.
See a few of you there!

G-F0RC3 15th May 2014 07:17

Good luck guys! :)
