Paying for an A320 Type Rating
 

Just wondered if anyone on here has bought is considering paying for their own A320 Type Rating. What are your thoughts on where to do it?

Try your hardest to get a company to pay for it for you. Worst case, you fund your own rating, don't get a job with the outfit providing the aircraft, and the next job possibility is with a company that operates Embraer or ATR...

Without time on type it's pretty useless. Even with time on type it's hard. You need some sort of contract at the end otherwise it is just a risky gamble. Tcx were doing something but I think that was 330 based, possibly 320 stuff to. At least it's a British company so you have some sort of guarantee of quality

The only guys I know who paid for their on TRs didn't get jobs out of it because they didn't have the hours on type.

They are now paying for ANOTHER TR with a company that will actually take them on afterwards.

Unless you own an A320, there is absolutely no reason to go out and buy a rating.

You should only ever pay for a type rating when there is a solid job offer attached to it, and even then it is far from ideal.

If you just go off and do your own training, you will only learn generic SOPs. The majority of the rating is company specific operations, so for an A320 operator to take you on they would still have to retrain you, which could still be at your cost. Generally this is why companies also want 500 hours on type, as then you have some proven record that makes it worth their while training you on their procedures.

Honestly, two operators can both be operating the same aircraft, and yet have surprisingly different procedures, which could lead to a lot of trouble if you've only learnt the generic stuff.
