Pilot CV's and cover letters
 
Does anyone have any good examples of pilot CV's and cover letters they'd like to share?

A CV can be quite personal and everybody is different however if anybody in the industry could tell us any tips on what potential employers look for it would be of great use!

Make sure the cv is not longer than one page and your cover letter on the other. Keep it brief and simple it worked for me even though some of the replies were sorry no jobs.

Have you considered Pilot Career Centre?
They can provide you a personal CV and cover letter... You need to pay them, though... And haven't had any personal experience. But many friends of mine say they've done a pretty good job!

If you're doing your CV maybe you are an unemployed pilot...
I'm doing an essay for my aviation marketing and management degree and I need the opinion of unemployed pilots regarding flight simulators used as a recurrence or familiarisation device... Could you spend two minutes to do my short survey? No personal details will be taken...

Some thoughts based on CVs received recently:
  • One page maximum
  • Make sure there's plenty of white on the page
  • Keep it relevant - no-one is interested in a list of the 13 types of SEP you've flown
  • Make sure your name, address, and contact details are clear
  • Have a clear breakdown of hours and qualifications
  • Keep any 'profile' brief and realistic, and based on facts, not opinion
  • Get the spelling and grammar checked by someone who knows what he's doing
  • Try to make it memorable - very difficult to do, but worthwhile
  • If you must include a photograph, make sure you don't look like pin-up from Crimewatch (you wouldn't believe how many do...)
  • Don't be photographed in four stripes unless you have proper command experience; a business jacket and tie are better than uniform

When I worked in Ops for a Uk air taxi company, we recieved many unsolicited CV's, one which caught the eye for all the wrong reasons was a full page pic of the said applicant dripping in gold bars, standing against a background of airways charts from his student Jep manual, and his credentials printed over the pic....this was a few years ago but Im sure a copy still exists in the Ops room.

NT, I guess the page was way too small for his huge ego pic, so he made the most of it. :}

Yeah. Just like one chap from Colombia, who took tons of pics of himself in white shirt, hat etc all sorts, only for me to find out when he showed up for his PPL and beyond, that he only did some theory back in Colombia. Yeah, hard to believe.

Anyway, he temporarily pulled the the 'Cap' accompanying his FB name after us guys at flight school had good laugh. He then replaced it with 'Pilot' after his name. As if whis whole profile, pictures etc wouldn't let people know in case they didn't.
Sure, some of us want to fly airlines only and dream of wearing stripes on shoulders..

As a Colombian, I'm embarrassed by blokes like this. Yet somehow, the world doesn't take most of us seriously :cool: . Interestingly though, I knew one of these specimens; a complete nut case: His email was his first name followed by "pilot" as was his Youtube channel, he pinned his shirt with every possible pin available to him including 767's and Polar Air Cargo's; an emotional train wreck...and what does he do now? He flies the F50 in the flag carrier because he knew someone whom the airline didn't want against them. Me? I "failed" the lie detector test...by telling the truth, just because I trusted the interviewer and she scared the bejesus out of me :ugh:

I read up on the so-called lie detector after that to never ever make the same mistake again. Makes for some interesting bedtime reading if you ever have to take that bloody piece of :mad:
