I know someone who has been called for an interview with Darwin Airline.

He had a frozen ATPL and 300 hrs TT. He had to pay for the type rating, but he will be refunded.

wilcoluca 10th Oct 2006 11:32

Colibris,

when was he called? And where did he come from?

dartagnan 11th Oct 2006 09:44

if you are talking about darwin airline in switzerland, here more info:

the interview consists of 1-2 hours questions with the HR chief, and in english please.Basic questions about you and your motivation. They prefer non experienced pilots with 200hours when many guys have more experience and are out of jobs.

training costs 45000 swiss francs(30'000 euro only) in Basel, and psy tests will cost you 1000 francs in Zurich during 2 days of total useless exams and video games. If you like swiss german accent, you will be served :). If you pass the psy test, you will be invited to pay the 45000 francs (not sure, but I suspect the company makes 30% from your pocket and it 's all about money at the end)

Salary is around 4700 francs plus 1000 swiss francs (per month) as refund for the Saab type rating. For non swiss citizen, can be less...and I think this is why they don't want swiss pilots. If they do really pay 5700 francs a month, it s not so bad for a 300 hours pilot.

it is a boring airline, with 4 airplanes type Saab 2000 based in South Switzerland and 5 or 6 destinations. They have 300 applications a day for a few positions.

I think a EU citizen(speaking italian and english fluently)has more chance than a Swiss citizen. the Swiss government prefer to see their own citizen out of jobs(25% of foreigners work now in switzerland)....and this is why it is so easy to obtain a work permit. All you need is a contract with a Swiss company, and paperwork should take 2 weeks.

Switzerland has lot of difficulties with Swiss Air international and the system is corrupted(strike, discrimination). Darwin can expand his fleet or collapse tomorrow, same thing for Flybaboo in Geneva.

(this is based on my opinion and my free speech' right, these informations can or can not be accurate)

thank you very much dartagnan, u gave us good informations today. When you ve a contract in ur hands it is not a problem to pay the tr.Probably as you said darwin s a bit boring company ( only 6 destinations ) but for me, and many more pilots with 250hrs, it ll be fantastic to have the opportunity to start to work and to live in a very nice city like Lugano.

Do you know any web site where it s possible to play with psy test?

I hope to get some news from guys that made an interview or calls with Darwin and their opinions in this forum.

good luck.

dartagnan 11th Oct 2006 17:39

they will send you the contract after passing the psy tests.
there is nothing to worry for these tests and the best would be to not do any preparation.

they can ask you to fly an ils on a computer, and they can invert the sens (stick to right, make you turn left).preparation can go against you.
these tests are very intensive, they want see if you can cop with stress and how you react.

if you googl it , you can get some informations at what temperature they will cook you.

for a 300hours pilot, this is a very good opportunity.the saab2000 is a very nice turboprop like the fokker 50:eek:

to dartagnan

thank you one more time u give me good information.:ok::ok::ok:
Few months ago I applied as fo and in case they ll take pilot one of this months and if i ll be lucky to get a call from them i ll know more or less what it ll expect to me. I ll be very happy to have the opportunity to get an interview..the first one.

P.S. if u ve more info please send to me an email.:ok:

dartagnan 12th Oct 2006 10:49

they want pilots staying 5 years or more.

will you stay 5 years in a company who fly between Zurich and Lugano everyday?

will you spend 35000 euro in a type rating when for the same amount of money, you can do a B737 or a A320 type rating?.

and will you live in a country which is not yours?away from your family!

Darwin prefers to hire pilots who live 1000-2000 km away than taking regional pilots who live in Lugano(exception for Swiss captain).

I think the managment don't like Swiss Citizen or it could be a secret deal between Swiss Air International and Darwin. Darwin is sharing the lines with Swiss.

Stop paying for a T/R!!!!

Conditions described are correct, interview, Zrh Training, psy test for 1000.- Chf non refundable, and all T/R payed by advance and refund up to 2/3 (If i remember...) on 3 to 5 years contract...
All that to fly a twin turbo-prop!!!!!
All I can say.... even if desesperate... STOP Paying for your type rating...
As an airline, they can not even pay 3 or 4 t/r at the same time...!?!?
... and you have to leave in Ticino (Italian switzerland....)

in the same category... but much worst.... you have Flybaboo... here you must pay about 12'000.- Euro for the T/R on bi turbo-prop dash 8-300.... but the will not pay you anything back on this amount... Boaring flights geneva-nice and so and so all day long... In 3 or 4 years, at least everybody has moved once from this ****ty company with about 80 employee for 3 aircrafts...

dartagnan 13th Jun 2007 09:33

One of the big manager "lost" his job, the recruiter left the company.Fresh money has been injected by an Italian company.
It is not going well at Darwin.

8-10 pilots have paid for psycho test in zurich, and most of them have "failed" and lost their time&money.
reason:"we haven't received the plane".
Based on this, fix your mind and see if it worths to spend so much money in a saab type rating for an airline which is near bankrupt.

Darwin buying Baboo, what a surprise....

Ronand 20th Mar 2011 19:59

30000eur for a Saab2000 typerating...... :bored:

HBZDN 22nd Mar 2011 21:34

what i have heard is that now it's around 23 000 euros and the company pays 66 % back within 4 years. cheers :)

papa_petje 23rd Mar 2011 01:31

Has anyone applied and received any reaction from them?

assymetricdrift 26th Mar 2011 09:00

I'm thinking of applying : Total time is 1900 hours, of which I have 1500 TT on the DHC8-Q400...

However, what really puts me off with the entire thing is the fact that you have to pay for the selection process, without knowing the potential job opportunities at the end of it.

I would love to live and work in Switzerland, but unless there is a little bit more clarity in terms of why I should pay that amount of money, for doing some video games, then I don't think I will apply.

That aside, it is tempting - almost earning twice as much as I earn in my current company, for doing the same job on the same aircraft!

Ronand 27th Mar 2011 09:45

Are you working for Air baltic by any chance?
Since when is darwin also flying the Q400? I thought they only have saabs?

Rat Catcher 27th Mar 2011 14:58

@ Ronand
I believe they took on the Q-400's that were at Baboo when they bought them...

PenTito 19th Jul 2011 09:44

assymetricdrift,
