Twin Otter operators
 

Hello,

I am curenlty looking into converting my licences to JAA, and was wondering about possibilities of finding work as a co-pilot on the DHC6 in the EU. I have almost 700 hours TT of which 450 is on the Twotter as a co-joe. I know Logan, Zimex and BAS operates them but besides that I am not sure about any others. I do have a EU passport.
Any info would be great, thanks.

Maldivian Air Taxi have 18 Twin Otters and I know they have at least one Canadian pilot.:)

lots of float time, i applied a few months ago - however dont have float time!!

Try SKYBUS in Cornwall.. They fly the Twott, seem like a really good bunch of people too. Not too sure if still recruiting but worth a go, espescially as the summer is on its way :sad:

Great bunch of people. Fantastic flying. Lovely Scenery. Great Beer. Cornish Pasties and surfing. Gets very busy in the summer, but still probably the best job I ever had.

Was a logan Twotter Driver until 2003. As far as I'm aware, the Otters are not going anywhere. The Islander Air Ambulance is going at the end of the current contract at March end.

Because most Otter Captains were dual rated on the Islander Ambulance at Glasgow they have had to relocate some of them to the SAAB fleet, aswell as a couple of top female Otter F/Os. Good move for them as it finally means the F/Os can get their ATPLs issued at some point. Something that will not happen on the Twotter fleet due CAA regs at the moment even though it is 'officially' multi-crew operated, it is still a 'single-crew' aircraft etc, etc.

I believe that 2 new F/Os have just been taken on:ok: , both female, to replace the two that are leaving for the SAAB and are training as we speak!

I also applied for Logy, was told BN2/ ambulance work going and retraining those guys to SAAB.They also said Twotter fully staffed..... next thing I hear a girl gets in on the Twotter:confused: :confused: :confused:

Does anyone know where the type rating is done for the Twin Otter ??

Is there a sim for this aircraft type ?

Logan and Skybus Twotter ratings are done by Logan and Skybus on type using their own TRTO. Loganair I know, have in the past trained external pilots to fly the Twotter, but not many.

I believe that Flight Safety operate a Twotter sim in Canada, but that may have changed by now, so please don't quote me. May be the only one, but not too sure?!

Heh guys and gals. The term twotter to a Canadian with thousands of hours on type is a bit gay. It think its a British term that was invented for it. Please stop!
We commonly call them ' The Otter' or by their real nick name 'The Hog'. As we invented them (possibly the best all around bush plane ever invented) and fly them in vast numbers, please learn from your colonial cousins across the pond and put this horrible name to rest.
Oh and there are lots of job out their for 'Hog' drivers if you look around. A fantastic machine to cut your teeth on before climbing into a big old boring jet. Some of the finest set of hands and I feet I have ever seen were at the controls of these awesome aircraft.

Much respect to the Canadians who built the bird, and although "hog" is the 'official' nickname, it will still be 'Twotter' to me. Besides, after all the JAR modifications that have been put on it to allow it to fly passengers, the hog has been slightly tamed in the UK!

Twin Otter
 

Extremely rugged plane, can do magic, especially if ur high on approach profile. tricky to land though as I'm finding out now. Besides that, its a real pilots airplane. Excellent for a first introduction to gas turbine engines. At first when I was told I was being put on the otter, I thought "no way", but now, I'm glad I'm learning flying the proper way.

Not sure what licences or experience you have but the biggest Twotter operator I know of is Kenn Borek. A couple of my colleagues used to work for them. I know they accept JAR licences for their Maldives operation. www.borekair.com

Skybus also operate Twotters to and from the Isles of Scilly in the South West UK.

Air Seychelles also operates 3 x Twin-Otters on domestic routes (wheeled version), they also now have 2 x Shorts 360 and 2 x 767 so there could be career progression. They do have expat pilots, as well as locals trained (I believe) in South Africa. I have got a Seychelles licence but was not flying for Air Seychelles and mine was converted from an FAA after sitting an air law exam here.
Don't know what their recruiting situation is at the moment, they seem like a good bunch the pilots I have spoken to. HR dept. is on 00248 384213. We are about 8 hours in advance of North America east coast.

Now if you want to fly the twotter(get stffd canav8r) then Papua new Guinea is the perfect spot.I spent four years there and had a ball,absolutely great flying.Operators there ar MBA Airlines of new guinea,Airlink,Hevilift,North coast aviation etc Most will require min 1500hrs however if you are prepared to fly in the right hand seat may go as low as 500.
The pilot shortage is starting to bite in PNG so good luck, For my job I packed a backpack and thumbed lifts from one operator to the next till I got a job.
