Rip Off

Ive been looking in to the self sponsored type rating with sigmar aviation, where you complete line training and 150 hours with Mytravel, and i've been waiting for them to confirm the price. To my surprise I thought Ryanair were bad but this Mytravel/Sigmar Aviation deal is just mad. They are asking for Ģ45,000 with no job, plus a Ģ500 assessment/interview with the same old you'll get a report on were your weak points are. Now I just really hope no one pays the 500 assessment let alone pays them the 45,000.

scroggs 9th Feb 2006 08:51

Bloody hel!!

Scroggs

Penworth 9th Feb 2006 09:19

Unfortunately there are. I work for MYT (on the ground) and I have heard that there are a few people flying for the company on this scheme. I thought it was with Alteon rather than Sigmar though...
Taking away the cost of the type rating it works out at about Ģ170 per hour to fly an A320 - brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "hour building" :ugh:

Jetavia 9th Feb 2006 09:21

It's a mad mad world.. :\

Kerropi 9th Feb 2006 09:38

  WTF is wrong with this world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are companies exploiting us poor wannabees more and more??? Why don't the BALPA or whatever union have someone make some sort of statement that this is WRONG!!! paying for a type and line training for a amount of 40K POUNDS is really UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe i am just naïve ... welcome to the real world :{ :{

CamelhAir 9th Feb 2006 11:56

Why are companies exploiting us poor wannabees more and more???
Because you wannabes are stupid enough to pay over the dollars. If you can't see that this is the reason, I'm not surprised you're paying the money

el dorado 9th Feb 2006 13:27

The question has been asked a thousand times. Why pay for a rating you can't use unless you are guaranteed a position afterwards?
If a company wants you it will pay for it and ask you for a reasonable commitment (=bond). The rest is stupid. When will wannabes learn?

Wannabe24 9th Feb 2006 13:29

It's not just about stupidity. There will always be someone out there who is rich enough to pay these amounts of sums to fly planes (won the lottery, dad has a goldmine, mother is a celebrity chef etc etc). This is never going to change. They will view this cost as a fast track method of getting on to a jet. We have three choices, 1.) We sit back and moan about (mostly) rich kids getting jobs. 2.) We try damn hard at trying to find a valid method of lobbying someone or something about the whole "training" industry. 3.) We set up an awareness campaign about such schemes (highlighting the blatant exploitation, and money grabbing) in an attempt to demonise such schemes. I like option 3! :E - www.pilot-exploitation.org ?

el dorado 9th Feb 2006 13:40

As w24 says there are too many people are getting sucked into a maelstrom of rosy pictures and promises without understanding basic human arseholishness. This is an immensely powerful force that makes people open their wallets to watch $/£/whatever currency you like fly away so that they can say "I'm training to be a pilot on such and such an a/c", etc. etc..
When will people learn that $ don't necessarily equal quality or return of investment? And by the way, anyone can buy a uniform and stand in a bar telling the chicks that they're a pilot.
Call me old fashioned but it's like someone sticking their d... up your a... and telling you they're not screwing you because they're not moving. Whatever.

EGBKFLYER 9th Feb 2006 13:48

I feel like a fourth option would be to sit back and not actually worry about it.:}

What percentage of fATPLs out there could afford to do something like this?
What percentage of the 'legitimate' job market is disappearing because of these schemes?
What is the rate of growth of these schemes right now and how big do we think it could get?

Maybe if we could answer those questions, we'd know if it was worth getting steamed-up over or whether it's just an insignificant effect of an oversupplied market.

pre3sg 9th Feb 2006 14:15

wannabe 24,

I think we are on the same page here - why sit back and complain about these exploitative schemes rather than doing somthing about it? I also agree that the best course of action would be to 'demonise' these schemes as you say.

Couldn't get the link to work by the way - are you sure it's correct.

I don't think that blaming the rich goes anywhere near explaining the number of people whom are involved in these type ratings. I would bet good money that the majority are leveraged up to their eyeballs.

Why can you not see that it is not the company being 'evil' - idiots pay for it - are you saying that the company should somehow compensate for people's idiocy?

152wiseguy 9th Feb 2006 15:52

I can't understand how anyone could possibly pass an assessment for one of these schemes. Surley anyone applying would simply fail on the grounds that if they are stupid enough to part with 45k for the course, then they are way too thick to be flying aeroplanes around.:yuk:

RVR800 9th Feb 2006 15:55

Its all Gonna Change - Aint seen nothin yet

What is needed is a licence that is ALL INCLUSIVE that takes you direct to the RHS of an airliner.

It coming soon and its called the MPL

The problem is too much of the frozen 'airline' pilots' licence is spent flying old light aircraft single crew round NDB holds - that costs £400 per hour so it makes a sim look cheap (and this scheme look cheap)

:ugh:

Sub Part K lasors will show it soon

richiya 10th Feb 2006 15:14

EGBKFLYER

I wonder how many people though the same way you did some years ago when people started paying for their own MCC courses, then the people that though the same when the first companies started to ask you to pay for your T/R......
Itīs messed up, but as everyone says, until people realise that itīs ALL of us that loose out, these schemes will keep growing.

What I canīt understand is HOW THE HELL can they spend that money with NO position afterwards....you finish the T/R, do a few hours, the company canīt wait for you to finish the hours to kick you out and get the next guy in the line in the scheme and so on $$$$...... On top of that the one that just got kick out will find he has another problem finding another job as he has very little experience on type, when a year goes by whatīs he going to do to renew the licence, T/R etc...... Guess he could allways pay another outfit such as get some more hours with the likes of eagle jet.....:yuk:

hixton 10th Feb 2006 15:37

I guess Mytravel are tyring to scrape in the cash from anywhere they can in the **** they are in, but hey this a low blow, it just shows what they think of pilots.
We need money, - I know lets ask someone to pay a ridiculous amount of cash for something that costs us nothing. - Yeah, pilots are schmucks lets put it to them!

PILOTOWL 10th Feb 2006 18:02

Why bother?

I think there should be a program on C4 about this. It could follow on after the Ryan Air Dispatches program.

It is absolutely crazy situation. There as already been an accident/suicide (depending on who's report you read) due to financial pressure put on a pilot. It was the Egypt Air that dived into the Atlantic. One theory goes, that the pilot was under so much pressure (sick toddler, massive debts, crap salary) he got a massive life insurance agreement a couple of months before and then decided for the suicide option.

No doubt if your a UK wannabe, beachy head is going to be extremely popular. May be the tw@t's at MYT could put a coach on (but from my past experience they won't turn up because they haven't paid the bill! ), you know after the last sector.

Imagine being one of these poor sod's who being "let go", can you imagine their state of mind? 140,000 in debt and nowhere to go.

Actually, after a little thought there will be a program. Titled " Suicide Pilot ".

Sorry, no TWIT-TWOO. Extremely depressed for the future.

Mr Wonka 10th Feb 2006 21:33

Well I must say, its a shocker,

If MYT sees companies operating with flight crew paying to type rate and at the companies own choice of training provider, AND then paying for line training; Then WHY wouldnt they ask pilots to cough up bags of cash ?

MYT ASK and the more pilots that pay, the quicker it becomes the accpeted (by the employers) norm. ONLY if the supply of these people dries up, will they then be faced with the prospect of paying and bonding for type ratings.

I cant imagine BALPA stepping in , why ? The training provider is offering the type rating to a measured standard, and the pilot is paying. So no case to answer, no reason for them to get involved.

But as others have pointed out, it isnt possible for everyone to pay for the type rating, and then what ?

Yes it would be nice to have an employer out there willing to meet you half way, and YES they do Flybe, BA Connect, Loganir do. So its not all over yet folks !

Chin up

Mr W

OBK! 10th Feb 2006 22:03

This scheme was not introduced by MYT but Sigmar picked MYT as a good training provider given that they have a great safety record, top notch training and a surplus of TRE's/TRI's. MYT gets no benefit other than a free FO for the summer.

The idiots here are the people who pay £45,000 but if nobody else offers decent line training at a price then who will?

You all have a free will. If you choose not to pay this stupid amount then DON'T. MYT has very good terms and cons and the company looks after its pilots very well...but remember, the guys who come through from Sigmar will NOT be MYT employees...just a contract trainee who has paid to get hours. They all have to go through assessment, and have to pay for this so no risk is posed to the company providing the assessment. If they get through, then they are considered good pilot material and in the hands of MYT, they will be made great pilots.

Don’t blame MYT.

hixton 11th Feb 2006 09:44

Nothing to do with it helping towards Mytravel`s massive debt then?
