Paying for selection

Ive just come back from my second selection attempt with Austrian Arrows, unfortunately I got a second negative result.

My question is this, you have to pay €360.- for the selection and they have a notoriously high rejection rate >95%. As there were about 50 candidates there this equares to €18 000,- , is there legally anything stopping an airline having selections as a money earner, even though they are not actually hiring?

Yes it is probably just sour grapes, but I thought it all went extremely well and was very suprised not even to be asked back for a sim check. :{

Just needed to get that off my chest,

any comments welcome

cheers for now

Goose

Sorry to hear that you never got to fly the sim. I find it outrageous that the airlines actually seem to be making money from these assessment centres these days. I guess they know that you have paid for the whole ride so far, you might as well keep on paying just because you are already used to it. Did they at least give you a free sandwich when you were there?

I guess as long as there are people out there that are willing to pay for these assessments, nothing will change in this 'dog-eat-dog' industry. Unfortunately it is a catch 22!

Keep the faith!

Thanks 99,

Yep just as bad as BA, not even a sandwich !

flyingmasai 26th Oct 2005 19:00

I refused an interview as well with vueling because of this 360 (euros). Standard price apparently: ryanair and others charge the same price...

But 360euro without a sim check is even worth... I thought it was to cover the sim cost.

I still manage to get free interviews with free food and drinks... So please do not attend those interviews without free food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

herta 27th Oct 2005 07:08

Yes but at least Austrian Arrows gives free standby tickets for the selection.
The price of a ticket between LON and INS is about 300 euros if you had to pay it yourself.
So we can say that it is finnaly more or less 60 euros too expensive.

wobble2plank 27th Oct 2005 07:13

Hmmmm, don't seem to remember parting with any hard earned green for the BA DEP selection, must have done it subconciously.

The coffee machine was heavily subsidised to 15p a cup and the lovely lady at the desk brought us all sandwiches from the canteen. Hoorah!

99Luftballons 27th Oct 2005 08:22

They might aswell charge you 361 Euros in future and offer you a cup of tea at least. At least it would be priced in, haha.

The standby is great if you are able to take a direct flight I believe, otherwise you have to cough up for that on too.....

Sky Goose 27th Oct 2005 08:51

On the nail 99,

Yes if you dont live on the Arrows network, its out with the old C-card again.

hallo herta

LON is not on the network, only Austrian main line fly there , so had to fly to Munich with easy and train it to Innsbruck, not the end of the world but coupled to the selection fee, accomadation etc. makes for an expensive sandwich ! (which I didn't get:{ )

A320rider 29th Oct 2005 21:41

95% rejection? are you sure of that.

why dont you stick them an attorney in their butt , it sound like a scam!don't you think?

for my point of view, it is totally illegal in europe to charge money for an interview.

I think if you write them a nice letter to get your money back or you will prosecute them, I think they will pay you money back.

Hello Skygoose,
Well, I was also at the selection on the 17th of October. Stufe 1 went fine but the stufe 2, psychometrics went pretty bad. Mainly my German is bad. I also called the following Monday and was told that I did not meet their expectation. But , they told me to reapply in 6 months. Yeah, and deprive my self of another €360.
First of all, I did not like the fact that their computers kept on crashing, and ending up doing 5 hours worth of psych tests.
That I tought was very distracting. Besides, i thought that the whole thing just lacked organization. And yes, I thought that the whole thing has become a nice money making scam. I my opinion, I think that most of the candidates fail their second phase, and I have counted about 35 of us during the 2nd phase. With a 5% pass rate, this means that maybe 2 candidates would be offered the job. I do regret paying €360, but more do I regret the amount of effort and time, and other expenses incurred. In the end, no, I do not plan to apply for the second time.
Cheers.

Well said mate !

I also just had interview with them.
So a bizzar interview. Only questions like what would you do if your Cpt started to smoke a cigarette. Then, drinks 7,5 hours preflight. Then steels 2 bottles cola after each flight..... then ....
Well pretty subjective ! I got turned down.

well 360 euros + 5 nights hotel accomodastion+food =700 euros (more or less.)

I will not apply again as well.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your reply's, good to know Im not alone.

Im sorry to hear you also feel let down/ripped off, will have to put it down to experience and move on.
Im sure we'll all get there in the end, and the prize will be all the more sweet for all the BS were being put through.

I have got another mate whose just been accepted for an interview with Tyrolean, early next year. Have warned him and refered him to this thread.
Seems like these selections are fairly regular.....good for their bottom line I suppose.

this company is famous to take your money.
Guys, you should stop to pay crooks!
A good company does not ask for money, It is like these lotteries scams on the net where you have to pay 1500 euro to release your million.

stay away from them!

Pointer 22nd Nov 2005 20:18

Be Aware!! So called Respected Airlines are dropping below reallity level!

I have recently received a letter from Transavia, a previously well respected company. In this letter they explain that eventhough many people have kept theyre file up with them over the past, they are ditching all the data(except that piece they need for theyre marketing dept.) and offer you to register with theire new website, of which they are quite enthousiastic, and offload you with a mere 65 euro.... and those 20 who register with them first will get a ... (get this) stylish Transavia T-shirt.

man have they sunk this low?? realy, i need my binoculars to look down this pit....

A320rider 24th Nov 2005 13:23

Pleaaaase, pay 300euro and come !!!. Maybe you will be the winner of a B737 right seat, if not, you will leave with a nice t-shirt with the inscription " Transexual airways"...:}

RAFAT 25th Nov 2005 19:50

In my opinion only total muppets pay to enter a job application process, and until the muppet count reduces, unscrupulous airlines will continue to charge. For God's sake don't do it!

BlueVolta 26th Nov 2005 09:42

The airlines they can, for the time being, do what they want; if you are ready, like some are, to pay 45000 euros for a type rating and 300 hours why would you not pay an extra 65 or even 360 for an interview?

The type ratings are already overpriced, a type rating is sold to an airlines about half the price that it is sold to a selfsponsored guys ans with even more FFS hours included...

But getting a Tshirt, that's really excellent!!!
:yuk:
We are at the same level that a barrel of washing powder! Great! :\

porchini 26th Nov 2005 15:30

It sucks, but on the other hand: If you make it they´ll at least pay your T/R (5 year bond). 360 Euro vs 27.000 Euro. Regarding TYR it isn´t the company making the money to my knowledge, but an (in)famous psykologist.

knertius 9th Dec 2005 06:26

To those wise guys out there who are telling the indebted hopefuls that they should not add another 350 Euros to their already incurred huge debt please put your money where your mouth is and provide some details where the hell the freebe airlines are that:
a) DON´T charge for interviews, and b) DON´T charge for ratings!!!!

Rather be helpful than tell people that they should boycott airlines that do charge because that won´t happen. Rather boycott the flying schools and aviation authorities that charge horrific amounts and turn most aviation enthusiasts into lifelong paupers before they are even in a position to put pen to paper for their first job application!!!!!

theWings 9th Dec 2005 10:59

knertius,

Your point is well made and acknowledges the fact that the bottom end of the pilot job market is a completely unregulated p1ss take. As a result, normally respectable airlines behave, well, badly, the T-shirt example being one particularly :yuk: gag (please God, don't tell me they were actually serious!). And, yes, paying for TRs is here to stay, period.:(

But pointer and RAFAT are also right in that people need to question whether they are prepared to be treated like this at the start, or each significant step, of their career. It's no different from your first day on the school playground. If you let yourself get kicked around now, then it will never stop. More scary is that you'll start expecting to be kicked around.

I know that financial issues and a total passion for flying makes resistance hard, but the does the end really justify the means? Do you really think that the route to your dream job starts with you bending over quite so far?! :ooh:
