Date of birth on CVs

To those for whom our age may be considered a handicap... are you putting d.o.b on your CVs? Is it a real no-no not too?

I used to hire people regularly in my previous life, and it wan't really a big deal for me if date of birth wasn't there. You'd be able to sort of work out roughly how old someone was from their work experience.

At least that way they might actually read a bit of the CV before binning it once registering you were born before 1980!!

What do you all think??

I think you would do well to target airlines that WILL consider you at the age you are at.....

I don't see the point of leaving your DoB off your CV if the company have a policy of NOT employing pilots of your age/ experience level....alll that will happen is that they will bin you at some later stage in the process, be it when they phone you and ask your age or are disappointed when you turn up for interview and they notice the zimmer frame!!!!

Consider this; Virgin Atlantic won't touch you without considerable TT (about 2500hrs off the top of my head), so how about not putting down your TT in the hope that you will get called for selection? See my point? If the answer is 'thanks but no thanks', then it is still going to be that way (and possibly lead to burnt bridges) when they do find out.

Another example is my company, Thomsonfly. If you are over 30 with low hours they won't employ you. If you are over 30 with experience levels commensurate with age then you will be looked at. If you leave your age off the application form you will not get called forward for selection.....at the most you will get called to ask your age!!!

Good luck.

agree with pilot pete!

Leaving your age off your cv is crazy. What if you were called for a sim check and you go plough 1 or 2 grand getting practise for your sim check to turn up and be told " were not interested you old geezer" now would'nt that suck.. flighttime

Try your local Smiths/Borders, they usually have a great selection of employment related books!

Even easier might be to give amazon a go!

If anyone can recommend anything specific would appreciate it.

try the oxford aviation website. They used to have a section on aviation style CVs.

Also trying searching. There are lots of posts relating to CV formats.

You can even pay someone to do it for you. I believe pilotpete offers this service as well as running courses on interview technique.

You could try 'Job Hunting For Pilots' by Gregory N. Brown. Transair have it, it is American though and so a bit different from ours.

Can't speak highly enough of one of Pilot Pete's training days though, he'll give you the formula for your CV, go through it for you and loads more besides.

Not sure if he is running courses at the mo due to his command course but check www.pittraining.co.uk

After the amount of dough you already laid out it is a small investment....

Just got my first job BTW, used many of PP's techniques at the interview. There is nothing better when it comes!

There are a couple of links to CV-related threads on this thread. Which, of course, you will have read already!! ;)
